"Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, `You must be born again.' " John 3:5-7
Due to original sin, we are all born separated from God, and spiritually dead. Our relationship with God must be re-established and our spirit must be reborn, or we will remain separated from Him for eternity (which defines Hell). However, there is absolutely nothing that we can do on our own to re-establish that relationship.
-
It cannot be purchased, because it is free.
-
It cannot be achieved through good works, because even the best of us is still a sinner, and God cannot look upon sin.
-
It cannot be attained through religion alone, because following man-made religious rules falls far short of God's law, and does not forgive your sins.
"But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy. " Titus 3:4-5
The only possible way to re-connect with God is to accept His gift of grace. Believe in His son Jesus Christ, that He died as a sacrifice for your sins, and that He conquered death by rising again on the third day. Agree to accept Him as your personal Savior, and begin a personal relationship with Him. It's really that simple. But not taking this simple step means being condemned to an eternity separated from God.
"He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end. " Ecclesiastes 3:11
Most of us have a hard time relating to the idea of eternity. In our experience everything has a beginning and an end; this is how we rationally understand the concept of time. But eternity has no start or finish. It has always been and will always be. This concept, to our limited perception and understanding, is too hard for most of us to rationalize. So we just simply do not think about it. But when we conclude that the universe, and all it contains, was made by the design of a Creator, then we must accept the fact of eternity. And this life, that may seem long to us at times, is hardly 'a flash in the pan' compared to it. We need to get our priorities straight and realize that we cannot truly live, until we are truly prepared to die, and we are not prepared to die until we bridge the gap between God and ourselves.
"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. " Romans 6:23
We must individually accept God's gift to us, which in and of itself is so simple a child could do it, but which is hard because we have to reject the evils and temptations of this world and make a commitment to begin a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
