"But your iniquities have separated you from God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear." Isaiah 59:2
God does not want to be separated from you; he loves you and wants to have a personal relationship with you. In fact, He loved us all so much, that when He created us He gave us a will and allowed us to make our own choices. It would have been so easy for God to make us all a bunch of robots, bowing down and worshiping Him whenever He told us to. But what kind of life would that have been? No, if we were to love and honor Him it would be because we chose to, not because we were forced to. He wanted us to choose Him, but instead we chose to go our own way, which led to the introduction of sin, and our separation from God.
"But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners Christ died for us." James 5:8
Once sin was introduced in the world we could no longer achieve eternal life. We are imperfect, and something needed to bridge the gap between God and us. So, in His awesome love for us, God actually became one of us, through His son Jesus Christ. He taught us how we should live our lives, and led the only perfect life, the only life ever lived without sin. Then, because God loved us so much, He took that one perfect son, in whom He was so proud, and sacrificed Him for our sins. When Jesus died on the cross He took the sins of the world upon Him, so that we might be forgiven. He bridged the gap between God and us. So now when God looks down upon those who are saved, He no longer sees the sinner, but instead He sees the perfection of His son Jesus Christ.
"No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God." John 16:27
How much more could God possibly love us? He has shown His love for us repeatedly since the beginning of time, only to have us continually rebel against Him. We boast about our sin, and invent new ways to commit it. We turn from God and break His laws. Why should He even care about us? We don't deserve His grace, but He still gives it to us freely. All we have to do is accept the gift from Him.
"Blessed are they whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered." Romans 4:7
