I wanted something new for my Product of the 80s site, so
after a little creative brainstorming, this is what I came up with. PONDER
THIS is a page that asks strangely philosophical questions about the 1980s.
Now, I'm not talking about "I ______, therefore I am." type of philosophy.
Just funny questions or comments to get you thinking. Remember, as Edie
Brickell said, "Philosophy...is a walk on slippery rocks." Have fun!
One quick note before we get started. This page is very new, and I would
like to see it grow. Of course, I'd like to hear your answers to the questions,
but I'd also like you to send in your questions, too! As always, I will
be glad to credit you with your first name or nickname, whichever you prefer.
So after you're done reading what's here so far, send me YOUR comments!
Ponder This...
What fictional character from the 80s were you most like? I'm not going to limit you to any type of character, so it could be movie character, TV character, even cartoon character. Just someone (or something...lol) that describes what you were like in the 80s.
I think I felt a lot like Brian Johnson in The Breakfast Club. Or maybe Molly Ringwald's character in Pretty In Pink....you know, the smart kind that never really fit into a specific group, just a few random friends here and there. Mix in a little of Garfield's overeating, oversleeping, lazy, I hate Mondays attitude, and that would be me.
Prince / "Mad Max"
both in attitude and style.

I probably shouldn't admit this but I wanted to be Murdock from the
A-Team in Grade 6 (1983). I went so far as to sign class photos Murdock
Mosher and I got a Pound Puppy for Christmas that I named Howler. I have
never fully been completely sane. In high school I went through a transition
from being like Brian Johnson (Anthony Michael Hall) to John Bender (Judd
Nelson) from the Breakfast Club.

I always felt like Kate Jackson - the plain smart angel.

Alex P. Keaton (Michael J. Fox) on Family Ties. Not in looks, but philosophy.

Who I wanted to be was the Jamie Gertz character in Square Pegs.
Who I was the girl who played against Sarah Jessica Parker's character
in Square Pegs.

Does it have to be FICTIONAL?
Because it seems like a lot of people seem to compare me to the guy
who was the inspiration for "Rain Man"...
And personally, I don't see the connection...
Sure, we're both exceptionally smart and we're both...um..."different"...but
other than that, I don't see the connection...
Well, that's my opinion...

I'll probably end up changing my mind on this later, but my first impulse
is to say Charlie Brown.
(Explanation for that one is WAY too long LOL)

I guess my answer would be... Alex Rogan.
Surprised? Didn't think so.

The person I wanted to be - JEM, or Sarah Jessica Parker in Girls Just
Want to Have Fun
The person I was - Ally Sheedy in The Breakfast Club. I was really
depressed and never spoke until about 1992.

The 80's character I identify best with is Chris Knight, the character
played by Val Kilmer in the movie "Real Genius". He was a geek who knew
how to have a good time, equally at home in the lab or at a party, and
playing
high-tech pranks for fun. This movie came out at the beginning of my senior
year in high school, and it perfectly captured who I wanted to be in college.
I'd started high school as a shy bookworm and had been gradually coming
out of my shell, and I was determined to make a new start in college. AS
things turned out, I think Chris would have been proud of my college life:
I went to a geek school (Rensselaer Polytechnic), threw parties, annoyed
professors and the administration, and generally blew the stereotype of
the taped-glasses, pocket-protector geek out of the water. Of course no
one's real life is as exciting as a movie plot, but seeing that movie gave
me hope and inspiration that brains and fun didn't have to be mutually
exclusive.

Who WAS I most like in the 80s? I would liken myself to (a female) Duckie
from "Pretty in Pink" if the question is asked in the past tense. This
is because I mooned over lots of guys, & I never quite got them. Who
AM I most like now? This would have to be Ronald from "Can't Buy Me Love,"
not because I had to pay to get dates or anything, but after a very rough
beginning, I have the guy, and am VERY happy with him.

I related to Jason Patrick's character in "The Lost Boys" because I
thought I was the reincarnation of Jim Morrison, not because I was a vampire.

I would have to say that I tried my best to act and look like the black
headed girl in Bananarama. I just thought she was so cool.

Who I most wanted to be like was Stephanie Zinone in Grease 2. Who I
was most like was probably Molly Ringwald's character in 16 Candles...I
was (at the time anyway), pretty but didn't realize it, and fairly insecure.
I wasn't like that all the time though, because I was more outspoken...I
was the chairperson of the social committee..a job that normally went
to cheerleader types, but I had the organizational skills to get the job
done, even though I wasn't what you would call "popular". I don't know...maybe
there isn't a character that was most like me...I guess I was pretty unique.

I see myself as Theo Huxtable. I stayed in trouble in school. I wasn't
a tough guy or anything but I was a leader. I also had very close friends
(like cockroach) who stuck by me no matter what. Although I wasn't rich
or anything I still had a pretty cool family. Including an older brother
who was a part of the "in" crowd.

When I was a kid I was B.A Baracus, I spoke like him and acted like
him. Then I hit 10 and everyone else was starting to get bigger than me
so I gave that one away. :)
