Sept. 14, 1999: Grand Prix of Italy at Monza

There will still be a party in progress at the Irish Jordan team, celebrating the victory of their driver HeinzHarald Frentzen in the Italian Grand Prix. Mika Hakkinen led much of the race in his McLaren/Mercedes, but threw it off the road at a chicane; the motor stalled. Frentzen was in second, running a very good race and expecting to finish that way. After Hakkinen's departure he drove exceedingly well and went on to win. Second was Ralf Schumacher, driving for Sir Frank Williams. Nice to see a Williams driver on the podium. Mika Salo finished third for Ferrari, while Eddie Irvine muddled through somehow to gain one point for himself and one for Ferrari in sixth, having the whole weekend never found the handling setup. Michael Schumacher is not fully recovered at all, as was reported earlier. Having tested and done some pre-qualifying reconnaisance laps, he found that his curb-climbing driving style (which would have served him very well at a track like Monza) was too stressful to his right leg, badly injured several weeks ago.

Eddie Irvine and Mika Hakkined are tied at 60 points in the contest for the World Driving Championship.

Belgium report 30 August 1999

The nicest circuit in Formula 1: Spa-francorchamps
Spa-francorchamps in the Ardenne Forest of Belgium

Congratulations to McLaren drivers David Coulthard and Mika Hakkinen, who placed 1st and 2nd. Kudos as well to Heinz-Harald Frentzen, who enjoyed a well-earned visit to the podium, and to Team Jordan, earlier in the season thought to be a "mid-pack" team, coming up to speed vigorously in recent races. Ferrari: Irvine and Salo were able to finish no better than 4th and 7th respectively, having started their Ferraris from 6th and 9th. Result: Irvine loses the lead in World Drivers' Championship points; and Ferrari loses its lead in the Constructors' Championship.

What about Michael Schuhmacher?
