Word is that he is working out even more than he did previously - 5 hours a day according to Derek Bell on Fox Sports TV. He also has been cycling - not riding his Harley-Davidson, but a bicycle. He reportedly almost persuaded Formula 1 officials to let him race in the Belgian Grand Prix, but they made him hold off. He has been testing, and drove some laps at Monza. Wishful thinking had it that he would race at Monza, which he did not; and that he would be driving in the Grand Prix of Europe, which he probably will also not do.
Update Oct. 6, 1999:
Ferrari said in a statement on Sunday that Michael Schumacher will not come
back untill the next season. The German driver had told them he did not feel
he had recovered fully enough to race.
Double world champion had medical tests in Paris on Sunday afternoon
which showed he was recovering very well and that he is able to race again.
Ferrari said he would be at Italy's Mugello circuit on Monday for testing but
he will not participate to the final races of the season in Malaysia on October
17 and Japan on October 31.
"Michael Schumacher has informed Ferrari he has taken the decision not to
participate at the next two grands prix because he does not feel he is in the
right physical condition for the races," the statement said.
Finland's Mika Salo will continue to replace Schumacher for the rest of the
season alongside Eddie Irvine, who is only two points behind defending
champion Mika Hakkinen in the race for the world drivers' title.
His spokesman Heiner Buchinger said : "Schumacher already had problems
with his right knee. Now, probably because of an infection caused by a pin
used to secure the bone, he's in renewed pain," Buchinger said.
