Petrus Jacobse Van Woort
(Peter Van Woert)


Petrus Jacobse, the son of Jacob Van Woerdt and Hendrikje Oothout, was born November 16, 1735. He married Rachel Ridder (Redder, De Ridder) on October 25, 1759 or 1760. The license was granted October 7, 1760. (Ref. A.D.C. -mar. 22)(Ref. N.Y.M. -page 435)(Ref. M.B. -3, -352)


From the Journals of Col. James Montresor, we find the following entry:
"Carpenters sent from Fort Edward, September 2nd, 1757
Jacob Brown--------------------35th Regiment
Zacheriah McDonald------------48th Regiment
John Mills-----------------------69th Regiment
Thursday 8th about one O'clock the following Carpenters & Bricklayers & Sawyers Sent up by Mr. Dies from Albany. Arriv'd here at about 10 O'clock & Set them to cover themselves for the night and open a Saw Pitt. Their pay to Commence the 5th Instant.

The carpenters above came in here, also the Stores for Fort Edward and this place. Sent a Party for Fascines, another to get timber & to dig the Ditch. One team & 12 oxen to draw up the timber and got a few stones."

The following children were baptized in the Dutch Reformed Church, Albany, NY.: (Ref. N.Y. -62, -27)
1. Hendrikje, bap. Aug. 30, 1761; (A.D.C. # 164)
Among the marriage records of the Schaghticoke Dutch Reformed Church, we find the following: No. 136, June 20, 1779 - Hendrick Lent en Henderickye van Woert - Feb. 27." (Ref. N.Y. -59, -326) In the same Church we find the following baptismal records:

Getuigen: Petrus v. Woert, Rachel Redder

Getuigen: Petrus v. Woert and Rascal de Redder."

2. Annatje, (Anatie), bap. May 13, 1764, born March 9, 1764.
The following was found among the marriage records of the Schaghticoke Dutch Reformed Church, Schaghticoke, NY.: "No. 203 - Yr. 1782 - Richard Devenport en Annatie van Woert, Aug 19." (Ref. N.Y. -60, -15). They were witnesses or sponsors at a baptism in the same church, October 10, 1790 - "Johannes, born Octob. 3, 1790, son of John W. Groesbeek and Annatje Devenport." (Ref. NY -63, -55)(maybe Richard's sister with the same name as his wife)

The following deeds were found in the Albany County Clerk's office, Albany, NY:

Book 8, page 397 - Date July 7, 1769 - Robert R. Livingston & wife Margaret, grantor - Petrus Van Woort et al (Petrus Van Woort and Cornelius John Van Denberg, both of Saratoga, NY) grantee - Lot A., part of lot 40, 340 acres in the Saratoga Patent, Albany, County, NY. This property was located on the east side of the Hudson River at Saratoga.

Book 8, page 395 - Date September 23, 1769 - Cornelius Johanise van derbergh, grantor - Petrus van Woort, grantee - Under 1/2 of lot 40, 8 acres also under 1/2 of saw-mill lot, Saratoga Patent, Albany. NY 


Petrus Van Woert was elected a representative from Saratoga County to the Albany Committee Chamber, January 6, 1778.
Peter Van Wort (Van Woert, Van Vort) was Captain in the Albany County, New York Militia, serving in the First Company, 13th Regiment (Saratoga Distict) during the American Revolutionary War. After the War was ended he applied for Land Bounty Rights. (Ref. LOCA)(Ref. N.Y.S.R. -page 306) (Ref. C.H.N.R. -1, -page 175)
The following Letters of Adminstration were found in the Surrogate's Record Room, Washington County, Salem, NY:

Book 1, page 41 - Date January 2, 1801 - Letters were issued to Rachel Van Wort, the widow and relic of Peter Van Wort, late of Easton in the County of Washington, deceased Peter Van Wort.

Book 1, page 67 - Date May 30, 1803 - Letters were issued to Richard Devenport and Anna Devenport on the estate of Rachel Van Woert, deceased.

Book 1, page 68 - Date May 30, 1803 - Letters were issued to Richard Devenport and Anna Devenport on the estate of Peter Van Woert, deceased.
