Errold moved to Randolph, MA sometime in the1890's (His Mom died in Mass. in 1894) He married Jessie and stayed in MA until he moved back to Maine in 1939. The family was in route to Aroostook Co when they encountered a blizzard and only made it as far as Augusta. They found the farm here in West Gardiner and decided to stay. The family has been here since.
Notes for JESSIE MAE SLOAN
Ran a Tea House in Randolph, MA in the Early 1930's
We still have a large amount of green sectional dishes that only come out at special occasion, which is usually Thanksgiving.
Child of EDGAR GRASSE and JESSIE SLOAN is:
i. ERROLD NORMAN6 GRASSE, b. August 26, 1901, Randolph,Norfolk Co,Ma; d. November 19, 1969, West Gardiner,Kenn Co,Me; m. MABEL LILLIAN MORSE, September 07, 1923, Randolph,Norfolk Co,Ma.
Notes for ERROLD NORMAN GRASSE:
Errold was born and brought up in Randolph, MA. Sometime after his marrage to Mabel and before their first child they moved to Brooklyn, NY and when Elihu Norman was about five they moved back to Randolph, MA and stayed their until the entire family moved here to ME in 1939. The orriginal house which was a beautiful old two story wood frame house was lost in the early 70's during a very wet season when the back side of the house's foundation let go and the entire two story back wall just fell into the field leaving the rest of the house intact but very airy. Needless to say the house had to be torn down and my grandparents built themselves a small four room house. My parents live in that residence with some other added rooms to this day.
Notes for MABEL LILLIAN MORSE:
Mabel was born and brought up in Brockton, Mass. Her story about being caught in a tornado in her teens was very scary. She told of being in an open field with two medium size trees and the only thing that saved her and her mom was holding onto the tree. Her mom had a bad scratch on her head but Mabel was fine. It seems it was one of the rare storms that us easterners encounter.
Longevity runs in Grams family. We just lost the last of her generation last summer, 1998..
