LEAVES MANY SURVIVORS - Mrs. Octavia Grass, 90, one of the oldest residents of Mecklenburg county succumbed last Saturday from a brief illness of pneumonia. The deceased passed away at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. J. L. Calebro, of Paw Creek.
Mrs. Grass is survived by hundreds of friends and scores of relatives in this county. She was a member of the Presbyterian church and known to be a true and devout christian.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. C. H. Rowan, paster of the Paw Creek church, from the home of Mrs. H. B. Hubbard, daughter of the deceased, at Pineville. Interment was made in the Elmwood cemetery.
She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Rosa Gibson, Mrs. E. B. Privett, Mrs. L. B. Hubbard, Mrs. Robert Thomas, all of the county; five sons, L. L. Grass of New York, Henry J. Grass of Boston, Mass., L. H. Grass of Gastonia, and E. B. Grass of Kannapolis; 61 grandchildren and 100 great grandchildren.
Mrs. Grass was born in Hollowell, Kenenbeck county, Maine, in 1846. Early in life she married Henry Grass, who came to this country at the age of four from France. They settled in Canada. He was a member of the DeGrass family of France, but on coming to the United States dropped the "De" from the first part of his name. They left Maine and traveled the coastal states to Florida. Finally they came to Union county, where they lived for three years. They moved from Union to Mecklenburg county and settled in the Paw Creek section, where they spent the rest of their lives, entering in to the life of the community.
Mrs. Grass's home was pointed out because of the flowers which bloomed in her yards the year round and which she tended and cared for herself as long as she was able. She was very active even in her later years and was loved and respected by many. Mr. Grass died April 27, 1924.

His family moved to North Carolina about 1875. On the trip he was accidently left behind at one of the RR stations and the train had to back up quite a ways to get him. He was 7. About 1893 at age 18 he returned to New England, 1st to Bosten then about 1902 to Quincy. He was a Carpenter and eventually owned and managed a couple of apartment buildings in Quincy.

Joseph Dean of Presque Isle, who had made his home with his daughter
Mrs. Charles Rand of Presque Isle the past two years, was found dead
lying on the floor behind the horses in the Harvey McGlauflin stable
at Presque Isle, Tuesday morning, January 22. Mr. Dean would have
been 72 years of age the 13th of June. Mr. Dean was born in Fort
Fairfield and lived here until about two years ago. His wife, who was
Miss Millicent Cloney, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edward
Cloney, died over 23 years ago. Of the 13 children born of this union
six are now living, as follows: Mrs. Ervin Johnston, Andover; Mrs.
John McGarrigie, Easton; Mrs. Percy Whitmore, Fort Fairfield; and
Mrs. Rand, Presque Isle. Mr. Dean is also survived by one sister,
Mrs. Murray Foster of Easton, and by three brothers, Solomon of
Goodrich, Fort Fairfield, Edward of Houlton, and Reuben of Caribou.
The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at 2:00 oclock at the Reformed
Baptist church, Rev. Fred Wright, pastor of the church, officiating.
The body was placed in Riverside Cemetery vault. Mr. Dean was a
pleasant neighbor and friend.

Earl Joseph Doak, 94, died Monday, (January 17, 2000) at Atlantic
General Hospital in Berlin, MD. Born in Fort Fairfield, ME, he was the son
of the late Isreal Doak and Ida (Grass) Doak. He was preceded in death by
two wives, Blanche (Gagnon) Doak in 1940, and Bertha
(Guerrette) Doak in 1993. He is survived by a daughter, Gloria (Doak)
Bassich of Ocean City, MD; two step-daughters, Lorraine Kodger of W.
Angusta, VA, and Frances Carron of Hartford. There are four grandchildren
and six step-grandchildren. Mr. Doak had worked as a farmer. He also had
worked as a factory worker with Colts Manufacturing and Hartford Special
Machine. He had been a member of the Knights of Columbus in Wethersfield. A
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Sat., Jan. 22, 10:30 a.m. at Corpus
Christi Church on Silas Deane Hwy., Wethersfield.
Rose Hill Funeral Home, 580 Elm St., Rocky Hill. Interment will be
in Rose Hill Memorial Park, Rocky Hill.

*From obituaries: ... "Born in Quincy, Mass. He worked with his father in
the building trades in earlier years. He moved to Sugar Hill in 1931 and
worked at Peckett's during the 1930's as a carpenter. He also fitted skiis
for students of Sig Buckmier, an Austrian ski instructor. During World War
II, Mr. Grass worked with his brother [Albert] in Quincy, manufacturing
brainwave recording instruments, now known as electroencephalographs. In
1944, he moved to Franconia and resumed his carpentry trade. While in
Franconia, he served as tax collector, selectman, school board member, and
state representative. In 1951, a heart attack caused Mr. Grass to retire
from carpentry. He then took up fine machine work, manufacturing compontents
for Grass Instrument Co. [in Quincy, Mass.] [working at home] Mr. Grass also
served as a shop instructor at the Laconia State School. [where they lived

Albert M Grass of Quincy, an enineer and inventor who developed the first instrument used for recording brain waves-a key boost in the diagnoses of epilepsy died Friday at his home after a brief illness. He was 81.
Mr Grass also founded the Cannon Manufacturing Co and developed specialized chart paper for recording electroencephalograms.
A lifelong Quincy resident, he graduated from the Mass. Institute of technology in 1934. He received honorary doctorates from Drexel Institute in 1963 and from Roger Williams College in 1989. In 1935, he began his career designing neurophysiological instruments for Harvard Medical School. During WWII, he joined the radiation laboratory at MIT and designed some of the first radar equipment. in 1945, he founded the Grass Instrument Co in Quincy, which designed and produced electronic equipment for clinical and research neurophysiology. He was the engineer and inventor of the first instrument for recording brain waves. He also founded the Cannon Manufacturing Co and developed specialized chart paper for the elctroencephalogram. In 1955 he founded the Grass Foundation to provide educational oppertunities for promissing students in neurophysiology and clinical neurology. It also provides support for the Marine Biological Laboratory in Wood Hole.

ALMENA F. GRASS MASARDIS - Almena F. Grass, 80, died Sept. 2, 1999, at a Mars Hill nursing home. She was born in Ashland, Dec. 12, 1918, the daughter of Leroy and Fern (Robinson) Clark. She was employed for many years as a food processor at McCain's and other area food processing plants. Mrs. Grass was a member of the Masardis Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She is survived by two sons, Duane Grass of Denver, N.C. and Charles Grass Jr. of Freeport, Fla.; one daughter, Shirley Fleming of Fort Fairfield; one sister, Alberta Collins of Harris, Tenn.; 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles Grass Sr. in 1985. Relatives and friends may call at the Stimson-Ouellette Funeral Home, 114 Exchange St., Ashland, from 12 p.m. until time of service on Sunday. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 2 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. Donald Morton Jr. officiating. Committal service and interment will be in the Masardis Municipal Cemetery.
