BALL / DONALDSON / BOLDIN Roots

I am Marjorie Ella Boldin Milner and my husband is Paul Thomas Milner. We have one son, Kevin Paul Milner.

My genealogy research was prompted when I undertook a job in 1996 creating a Web Page and Program for the Monticello Celtic Festival. My research for this project jogged my memory and reminded me that as children my sister and I learned that our bloodlines ran all the way back to the MacDonald Clan in Scotland and that we were related to George Washington's mother, Mary Ball (m. Augustine Washington). Kevin showed a real interest in this after we attended the games. And so the search began...

These pages will eventually contain as much of the full Family Tree
as I can create for our son, Kevin Paul Milner.

Kevin's Mom (me): Marjorie Ella Boldin
Kevin's Dad: Paul Thomas Milner
I have one sister: Dianne Theresa Boldin m. James Holmes
Paul has one sister: Laura Beth Milner

My Father: Bernard Eldridge Boldin
(had a brother Charles Edmond Boldin) VA

My Mother: Elynore Wilhelmina Martin (had a sister Marjorie Martin) MN BOYD / CAPRON / DURHAM / MARTIN /SCHULZ Genealogy

Father's Father:
John Wesley Boldin - b. Oct. 11, 1843 d. January 15, 1908
(buried in the Ball Cemetary in Arlington, VA, you can view the names on headstone).
He was a member of Company D of the 3rd Pennsylvania
Cavalry during the Civil War.
He also used the alias: John Boling.
He was a member of the Knights of Pythias.
We have no information on his ancesters.

Father's Mother:
Ella Jane Donaldson (b. 1855; d. 1953)
one of nine children of Mary Ball (b. 1818 d. 1897) and
James W. Donaldson (b. 1819 d. 1873)
of Washington, D.C. There is more information on this
family at DONALDSON genealogy.

Mary Ball was one of 11 children of Horatio Ball, Sr.
of Ballston, Alexandria Co., VA. (b. Nov. 30, 1785 d. Feb. 1873)
son of John Ball (Ensign) (b. 1746 d. 1814)
and Mary Ann Thrift (b. 19 Sep., 1750 d. 10 Oct., 1803) m. 12 Dec., 1773.
The other 10 were:
By his first Wife, Catherine Marcey (m. ca. 1815)

By his Second Wife, Elizabeth Marcey (m. ca. 1830)
See Horatio Ball Sr.'s Will

John Ball (Ensign) b. 1746 d. 1814, was the son of Moses Ball (b. 2 May, 1717 d. 3 Sep., 1792) and Ann Nancy Brashear (b. 26 Sep. 1729 in Prince George Co., MD) m. 23 June, 1745 in Fairfax Co., VA. John married Mary Ann Thrift b. 1750, m. 1773, d. 1803. She was the daughter of George Thrift and Elizabeth Hurst (Scottish ancestry).

John Ball and Mary Ann Thrift had the following children:

Moses Ball was the son of John Ball (b. 1674 d.1724) and Winifred Williams (b.1676) daughter of William Williams and Anne Harrison. Moses married Ann Nancy Brashear (b. 26 Sep. 1729 in Prince George Co., MD) m. 23 June, 1745 in Fairfax Co., VA. Ann Nancy Brashear was the daughter of Robert Cager Brashear (b. 19 Feb., 1703/04 in Prince George Co., MD d. July, 1786 in Rocky Springs, NC)., and ?

Moses Ball and Ann Nancy Brashear had the following children:

Here, the mist thickens and different researchers
have found different paths through it.

The progenator of this line was Col. William Ball who was born 1615 in Wiltshire, England, and died October 15, 1680 in Millenbeck, VA. He married Hannah Atherold.

Some researchers have found that Col. William Ball and Hannah Atherold had only one child - Richard Ball. Richard Ball then had two children: Richard, Jr. and William Ball. Richard, Jr. then had John Ball and William had Joseph Ball.

Another version is:

Child of William Ball and Hannah Atherold is:

Richard Ball. He married Elizabeth Linton, daughter of Moses Linton and Mary _?_. Children of Richard Ball and Elizabeth Linton are:

John Ball, b. 1670, Stafford Co., Va; d. 1742, Stafford Co., Va
Samuel Ball
Francis Ball
Alling Ball
Hannah Ball

Joseph Ball, b. 1649; d. 1711.

This theory would make John Ball and Joseph Ball (father of Mary Ball Washington) brothers, and would make John Ball Mary's uncle. This would also make Col. Wm. Ball Mary's great grandfather and John's grandfather.

Other researchers (including: The Waddle Pages) have found that Col. Wm. Ball and Hanna Atherold had the following children:

This theory shows Joseph Ball and Mary Montague Johnson having the following children:

John Ball b. 1670-1675, d.1742, Stafford, VA m. Winifred Williams
Martha Ball
Mary Ball b.1707-1709 d. 1789, m. Augustine Washington
Frances Ball
Sarah Ball
Eve Ball
Jesse Ball
James Ball
Edwin Ball
Jeduthum Ball
Sinah Ball

However, this theory does not mention Joseph's first marriage to Elizabeth Romney. Some researchers attribute all of Joseph's children EXCEPT Mary to his first wife, Elizabeth.

This theory would make Joseph Ball and Richard Ball brothers, and it would make Joseph Ball the father of both Mary Ball Washington and John Ball and would make Col. William Ball both Mary and John's grandfather. This theory would be compatible with all the historical records that show that Mary's father died when she was very young , about 3 years old. This line of thinking also supports the family histories so many of us were taught as children, that we are directly related to MARY BALL. I believe that we can't ALL be wrong! Where there are so many similar family histories, there must be a truth to be found.

The names engraved on the main headstone in the Ball Family Cemetary in Arlington, VA on Washington Blvd. may be viewed here.

NOW A PLEA ... I am desperately seeking information on John W. Boldin (Civil War Alias: John Boling) and George W. Boldin (Civil War Alias: George Boulden). I have discovered that there are Civil War pension files on John BOLING (BOLDIN) that have been archived at Suitland, MD. NARA did not have access to these files. I have had to go through Veteran's Affairs to try to obtain copies. (That is a whole other story.)

For George W. BOLDIN (Boulden) (John W. Boldin's brother), I have 2 sets of Civil War military discharge papers (one for discharge from a 3 yr. enlistment in Company A, 2nd Regiment of Eastern Shore Maryland Volunteers with enlistment date of Nov. 1, 1861 and discharge date: Feb. 10, 1864 - NAME: George Boulden); the other shows Enlistment date of Feb. 6, 1864 and a discharge date of July 10, 1865 for a George Boldin in Fred K. W. Heck's Company K, 2nd Regiment, Maryland Veteran Volunteers).

The town they lived in or owned property in was in or near Ballston, VA, which has since been incorporated into Washington, D.C. My grandfather had a freight business between Washington, DC and Ballston (horse and wagon). It was on a rainy night in 1908 that the wagon started to veer off the road and fall into a ditch. John tried to right the wagon and in so doing caused excessive strain on his heart. Cause of death is listed as "burst heart." His son, Charles Edmond, was sent for to identify the body. Charles was about 13 at the time.

Our Donaldson line is descended from Clan MacDonald of Scotland. I have had wonderful luck on the net finding Donaldson cousins I should have met while growing up, but didn't.

The Ball line is descended from Col. William Ball of England (b. circa 1615; d. Nov. 1680) - emigrated to Millenbeck, Lancaster Co., VA in 1650. This has been passed down to all of us ...and yet, I find pages on the Net that attribute our branch of the Virginia Ball Family to Richard Ball as a brother of Col. William Ball.

If any family geneologist out there has information that might fill in some of the blanks, I certainly would appreciate hearing from you.

After this half of the project I will be gathering information on Milner / Campbell and Adams / Walden in Ohio and Kentucky.

Please if you have information I haven't discovered yet, corrections, or have pages you would like linked from this site.

Ancesters of George Washington
This is one of two sites that lists Mary and John as children of (Capt.) Joseph Ball and Mary Montague.

Franklin Lickliter's Genealogy
"William Ball, Lord of the Manor" has this family back to the 1400's in England.
This site shows Col. William Ball's (born in England, died at Millenbeck, VA) father as Capt. Wm. Ball, born in England, died in Connecticut and shows Richard Ball as only child of William Ball and Hannah Atherold.
According to Lickliter, the children of RICHARD BALL and ELIZABETH LINTON are:

  • JOHN BALL, b. 1670, Stafford Co., Va; d. 1742, Stafford Co., Va.
  • SAMUEL BALL.
  • FRANCIS BALL.
  • ALLING BALL.
  • HANNAH BALL.
  • JOSEPH BALL, b. 1649; d. 1711.
He includes extensive notes on John Ball, and his son Moses Ball including transcripts of their Wills.

Susan Smith's BALL Genealogy Pages
Susan Smith has a much-researched, but very different line of descent for this family, which would seem to exclude Col. Wm. Ball. She finds Col. Wm. Ball and Richard Ball as brothers, and Richard, rather than the Colonel, as the progenator of this line. The site also includes links to other Ball Families and Lost Ball Families on the Web.
