MY SCOTTISH ROOTS
The Tartan at the left is the MacDonald Hunt Tartan.

The ancesters of my great grandfather, James W. Donaldson, were Jacobite rebels in Scotland and were deported to Virginia in 1716 in the ship Friendship.

My grandmother was Ella Jane Donaldson (b. 1855 Alexandria, VA d. 1948 in Alexandria, VA m. 1885 John Wesley Boldin).

John Wesley Boldin Ella Jane Donaldson

Ella Jane Donaldson was one of a large family, including: Babe Donaldson (b. 1861 d. ?), Silas W. Donaldson (b. 1859 d.?), Ernest Donaldson (b. 1857 d. ?), Ambrose W. Donaldson (b. 1853 d. 1863), James Edgar Donaldson (b. 1851 d. 1922), Alice Donaldson (b. 1848 d. 1877), Mary C. Donaldson (b. Jul. 1847 d. 1848) and F. Marion Donaldson (b. 1845 d. ?).

Their parents were James W. Donaldson (b. 1819 d. 1873) and Mary Ann Ball (see BALL genealogy).

Parents of James W. Donaldson were Robert Donaldson (b. 1791 d. 11/19/1869) and Elizabeth Burch (m. 01/05/1815). Robert Donaldson fought the British in Washington, D.C. during the War of 1812.

Robert Donaldson's parents were: Thomas Donaldson (b. 1750 d. 1832 in Livingston Heights, Arlington, VA) and Nancy Pierce. Robert's siblings and their wives were: John Donaldson (b. 1785) who married Rebecca Mills in 1814; Sanford Donaldson (b. 1790) who married Cornelia Allison in D.C.; and Benjamin Donaldson (b. 1795) (no wife listed) who served in the Confederacy.

Thomas Donaldson's parents were: Andrew Donaldson (b. 1721 Snow Hill, MD Resident of Fairfax, VA by 1761) and Elizabeth ----. Thomas' siblings were: Andrew Donaldson, Jr. and William Donaldson who married Ann Thompson.

Andrew Donaldson's parents were: John Donaldson (b. ? d. ?) and Catherine Davies (no dates), who was the sister of Samuel Davies, President of Princeton University. Andrew's siblings and their wives were: John Donaldson who married Rachel Stockley (they moved to TN) - their daughter became Andrew Jackson's beloved Rachel; William Donaldson who married Mary Sweeney (they also moved to TN); and Mary Donaldson who married Hugh Henry.

John Donaldson's father was John Donaldson (b. ca. 1685 in Scotland). John and his brothers: Sanford, Benjamin, Henry and Robert, were the immigrant ancesters of this branch of the Donaldsons.

There doesn't seem to be much available information on the spouses' families as yet.

In keeping with my Scottish heritage, I have worked with our local Celtic Festival & Highland Games for the past three years providing a web page to announce the event and preparing the Program for the Festival. This year Tallahassee Scottish Highland Games & Celtic Festival will be held October, 30 in Tallahassee, Florida. I will be preparing the Program again this year. If you would like to see our web page, (it does have some interesting links) please visit.

Please note, there is an ICQ Pager on the Home Page.
