Petroleum and Gas
Profile
Tanzania has been intermittently explored over the last 40 years. Most of the multinational petroleum companies were represented, in the area at one time or another. Significant gas discoveries were made at Songo Songo and Mnazi Bay.
So far a total of 33 exploration and development wells have been drilled. Between l954-l997, 25 New Field Wildcats (NFW) and eight delineation wells (at Songo Songo) were drilled. Of the 25 exploratory wells, 23 were drilled in the coastal basins and two in the interior rift Rukwa Basin.
The cumulative seismic coverage in public domain is approximately 52,000 km; 28,000 km offshore and 24,000 km onshore, including the interior rift basins. There is an additional 11,000 km of modern non-exclusive geophysical data acquired in the year 1999/2000.
Exploration and exploitation of all mineral resources in the country including coal and petroleum, is the responsibility of the Ministry of Energy and Minerals. Petroleum exploration and development is governed by the Petroleum (Exploration and Production) Act, 1980 and the Petroleum (Conservation) Act, 1981. The Energy and Water Regulatory Authority (EWURA) will be responsible for regulating such aspects as gas and petroleum transmission by pipeline
The role of TPDC under the current liberalisation of the petroleum sector includes: -
To promote petroleum exploration in the country;
To acquire preliminary data on prospective areas in the country for the purpose of attracting exploration companies to invest in oil and gas exploration;
To store geological information and data for the country;
To promote development of the already discovered hydrocarbons; and
To advise the Government on petroleum exploration, production and related matters.
Opportunities
Tanzania has excellent opportunities for oil and gas exploration and development in its mostly unexploited but potential sedimentary basins. Geological experts have long suspected that there are considerable reserves off the coast of Tanzania. The Government offers competitive terms of would be investors including economic, legal and fiscal incentives.
Proven hydrocarbons and potentiality for additional discoveries is evidenced by the development of Songo Songo gasfield and the expected development of Mnazi Bay Gas Discovery.
TPDC has released an outcome of a study entitled "The Hydrocarbon Potential of Tanzania (1997)". This comprehensive multi-displinary study incorporates data on geochemical, biostratigraphic and hydrogeologic information, onshore and off shore gravity, magnetic and seismic interpretation. The report is available to interested parties through Alconsult International Limited, Alberta, Canada
