Background
The beauty of
Dakar, is borne out an eclectic mix of colonial architecture, the
gravity of time and the friendliness of a gentle community. Oh yes,
Ewan says that Dakar is a nice place as well.
Our homes. Ewan's on the left and Brett's on the right. Daour lives above Brett, so if you look very carefully you will see the women prostrating themselves at his feet. Picture taken from the bar / swimming pool on top of the Independance hotel. The resturant below the pool serves the best steaks in Dakar (so far)
Another view from the pool on top the Independance hotel. As you can see this is the docks
A street scene in Dakar, opposite the Grande Mosque
The new Phare or light-house to Franco-phobes
A view of the chaos that is Dakar streets. This is a side street near the flat and absolutely jam packed. (As Dave Rollo explains "any country that learnt to drive from the French were off to a bad start")
Along the Corniche are quite a few rather interesting sculptures. These two are Ronald McDonalds favourite. Brett is showing his cultural appreciation by going behind them for a wee.
Brett flexing his muscles to impress the totty on the beach. Unfortunately she wasn't very photogenic (cameras don't record "beer pretty"). This is the beach at Monaco Plage.
The road to Monaco Plage does a dodgy detour through a really bad neighborhood. The entire route runs past the "painted wall". The images are incredibly detailed and include images of famous people (both Senegalese and international, religeous and cultural, politicians and pop stars), historical events and abstract design. Unfortunately one picture does not capture the scope of the work and it's sheer size.
The standard form of transport in Senegal is the Bus / Car rapides. There is normally one guy hanging on the back who acts as conductor and tout. They are also a law unto themselves and are responsible for a large percentage of road accidents here.
Another beach, another flag. Why does Ewan have a lamp growing out of his head? (Maybe it was a flash of inspiration i.e. have another Flag) This is the beach at Virage.
