Other Interesting Places on the Trip
Warsaw Market Square
This is the Warsaw Old Town marketplace.
The Old Town of Warsaw is only about 50 years old,
because the entire city was reduced to rubble in World War II.
The Old Town was rebuilt on the rubble, using pictures and paintings
to match it to the original, starting in 1971.
It's now about 1 meter higher than the original because of the rubble below it.
The people of Poland have done a remarkable job of recovering from
soul-wrenching destruction by the Allies, then by the Nazis
before they pulled out. Looking at pictures of post-war Warsaw,
it must have been a terribly difficult thing for anyone returning
to his home and seeing such total desolation.
We'd expected to see evidence of the poor economic conditions
brought on by the Soviet domination, but we didn't. Warsaw was one of
the surprising delights of the trip.
