You don't have to be a weatherman to care which way the wind blows:
whether you're wondering if it's time to sow the crops that your livelihood
depends on or just planting pansies, knowing what to expect can be essential.
If you're planning a trip, wondering when it'll be an auspicious time to
set sail or go hiking, or collecting information for a high-school research
paper on the climate, here's a world's worth of sources to keep your personal
weather report up to date.
There are probably several hundred newsgroups concerned with weather
as it affects specific states, nations, or regions, such as ia.weather
(Iowa) and pdx.weather (Portland, Oregon). Check with your Internet Service
Provider to get a list of any local weather-related newsgroups that they
carry.
Alfred-Wegener-Institute
Ocean and polar research into weather and larger climate issues goes on
here. You can read about the institute's Antarctic research station and
ocean measurements, and check out links to several of its projects.
Atlantic Hurricane Season
Veteran storm trackers and novices alike will appreciate this site, which
displays the National Weather Bureau's tropical weather alerts at the bottom
of the page and satellite images of current storms at the top.
Australia Bureau of Meteorology
Current forecasts and observations, weather news and warnings, climate
data, and other weather-related information for Australia are all available
at the Gopher site, which will be phased out in late 1996 in favor of the
Web site.
Aviso Altimetrie
Oceanographers using satellites to study the oceans have created this Web
page, which includes data on the satellites and their missions, and some
of the results. In English or French.
Centre for Atmospheric Science
These sites offer information on upcoming seminars, publications, and positions
available at the center, which is part of Cambridge University. This site
includes information on their Atmospheric Chemistry Modeling Support Unit
(a division that is writing software for creating computer simulations
of the atmosphere), and European ozone research. Some of the programs developed
for the center's projects are also available at the FTP site.
CLIMAT Mailing List
This list is for discussions of the CLIMAT system of data stations, which
provide monthly means for a given country. Users of the data post various
messages here for all users to read.

Climate Prediction Center-African Desk
Here you can find current data and recently archived data on African weather,
plus predictions, rainfall records and patterns, and ten-day charts created
with reports from stations all around the continent.
CNN-Weather News
U.S. and world forecasts are just a small part of what you can find in
this well-designed weather news site. Top weather stories of the moment
will appear as you log on, and you can browse through CNN's weather news
archives.
The CoVis Greenhouse Effect Visualizer
You can choose different datasets and then run a computer visualization
that runs over time, demonstrating the greenhouse effect that scientists
believe is taking hold of the earth's climate. This tool was built for
classroom use, so it's easy to figure out.
Current Weather Maps/Movies
This site includes a number of high-resolution images in GIF format and
digital movies of events or geographical areas around the globe. And, if
you really want to, you can check out the weather in Lansing, Michigan,
where this server is located.
The Daily Planet
Of all the weather-related sites online, this one is probably the easiest
to use for the amateur. It includes satellite pictures and forecasts, links
to temperature and weather forecasts for cities around the world, severe
weather warnings and updates, a hypertext climatology textbook, and global
links to more weather sites. Developed by the University of Illinois at
Champaign- Urbana.
Environment Canada
This is the Web site of the Canadian government's weather-related departments.
It includes forecasts, maps, and satellite images for Canada; long-range
predictions; and information on climate and meteorology research. In English
or French.
Enviroscaping to Conserve Energy
This book on microclimate modification explains the basic principles of
microclimates, and how landscape design can alter the climate.
Freese-Notis Weather.Net National Weather Advisory
At this site you can grab a weather forecast tailored to specific areas
or interests, such as agriculture. More advanced forecasts created with
an interactive program are also available through a link at this site.
German Climate Computing Center
This site is run by a supercomputer center that does climate research,
and is mostly in German. Includes information on its projects and staff,
as well as some MPEG-format excerpts from climatology movies they've produced.
GT-ATMDC
This mailing list is for discussing the dispersion of chemicals through
the earth's atmosphere.

Hapex Sahel
This site is maintained by a group working in western Niger to understand
the significance of the Sahel (Sahara) desert to global weather. You can
examine the online data or spot images, and find out how to register to
receive the official data.
High-Resolution Africa Images
Current satellite images of Africa are available here, making the weather
visual.
International Commission for Exploration of the Sea
This group's archive holds maps and other oceanographic information, focusing
on the North Atlantic. It includes some PC software as well. In English
or French.
International Weather Observations
This archive, maintained by Florida State University, has lots of plots,
maps, and data from around the world. Hurricanes, naturally, come in for
special attention.
Latest Weather in New Zealand
Here you can find JPEG-format images from New Zealand, courtesy of the
VUW Institute of Geophysics. The FTP site archives the hourly images from
the past two days; an MPEG version is in the works.

Now you can go straight to the same source used by the local TV meteorologist:
this Web site for the U.S. National Weather Service offers worldwide recent
weather data and satellite images, weather warnings, and forecasts by region.
The NOAA Weather Page
Lots of U.S. weather data, as well as pointers to weather servers all around
the globe, are the subject here. It includes data about climactic changes
in prehistory, too.
Russian Weather
You can check on recent and current weather in the U.S. and in Moscow,
St. Petersburg, and other Russian cities here by way of a clickable map.

Discussions of all kinds of meteorological topics occur in this newsgroup.
University of Reading Meteorology Department
Various weather data and maps, including news about a project called the
Airborne Southern Hemisphere Ozone Expedition. This department's staff
is doing the data processing for the expedition. Some digital movies are
also available on meteorological events.
The Weather Channel Online
Every cable-ready couch potato has turned to the Weather Channel for insomnia
relief-or even for weather reports. Now you can do it online, too. It's
a colorful site with lots of information.
Weather and Global Monitoring
Lots of images, organized by region or nation (Pacific, Antarctica, Japan,
China, Korea, and so forth) are available through this Web page, as well
as forecasts and environmental information on Australia and other countries.
Weatherwatching in Antarctica
The story: it's cold, and some days it's colder. This page stores e-mail
from a meteorological technician to a U.S. school. It's a fascinating peek
into working the weather beat under tough conditions.
World Meteorological Organization
This is the meteorology group of the United Nations. You can find information
on the organization, a directory of its staff, an FTP site with documents
of the WMO, and pointers to the meteorological sites of member nations.

Wxsat
This list isn't big on discussion, but it automatically sends you a blizzard
of weather data every day: all NOAA/NESDIS bulletins on info from their
satellites, plus some data on the Meteosat weather satellite. It's the
best choice if you need to get lots of data without hunting for it every
day. The FTP site is an archive of programs and graphics sent over the
list.
