"Pints of View"

Stafford & Stone Branch

FROM THE ARCHIVES

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

The first meetings of the Stafford and Stone branch of CAMRA were held during the Summer of 1974. They were at the Chains on 23rd May and 7th June, the White Lion on 26th June and Railway on 29th August.

These three Stafford pubs have since fared rather differently, with just the Railway, in Castle Street, still well worth a visit. The Chains is now a keg only mock Irish pub, while the White Lion was demolished in 1976.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

The Stafford and Stone branch hosted an inter-branch cricket match in the grounds of the Fox at Marston on Sunday 26th August 1979. One of the keenest players was local branch secretary Phil Green, who now lives in the Sheffield area.

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

The Fox was again in the news five years later when licensee Leslie Phillips was granted planning permission to brew his own beers on the premises. Sadly, nothing came of the plans, despite "Pints of View" reporting that brewing would be going ahead "certainly by Christmas".
