PUB OF THE MONTH
February/March
THE PLOUGH INN, BIGNALL END
Christopher Paul Holt, reads the new name which has been over the door of The Plough Inn, Bignall End, since August 1999. However, don't expect too many changes at this Real Ale oasis since Paul took over from father Les.
"You don't change winning formula," says Paul, "and my dad got it right when he came here eight years ago."
Paul's father, Les, bought The Plough in the early 1990s intending to run the type of pub that would stock the variety and quality of beers, which he himself would prefer to drink. After a few hiccups along the way, Les's foresight has proven correct, and The Plough is now firmly on a Real Ale circuit of pubs, which sell constantly, changing quality guest beers.
It was not just the constantly changing guest beers, and the good value meals served in the split level lounge (not served Sunday evenings) which won The Plough the Potteries' Branch 1995 "Pub of the Year" award after being a 'Pub of the Month' the same year. It is a combination of quality, traditional atmosphere and community spirit at this traditional 'local' which makes it so special.
But Paul and wife Claire are not content to sit back on their laurels - they have their own plans to improve the cask ale aspect of the pub. Banks's Bitter is the mainstay of the cask beers on offer, and it is still the biggest seller in spite of the choice available. It is always on form, and is very popular.
The Plough is situated on the B5500, Newcastle to Nantwich road, approx. 4 miles from J16 of the M6 motorway. So if you are passing, call in. You will be made very welcome.
Presentation of the 'Pub of the Month' certificate and barrel will take place on Saturday 11th March 2000 at 1pm, and everyone is welcome!
