NO TRAVELLERS?
An unusual sign appeared outside The Traveller's Rest, at the top of Kidsgrove Bank, a few weeks ago.
Strangely enough the sign proclaimed "No Travellers"!!
I presume The Red Lion around the corner doesn't have any trouble keeping red lions off the premises?
RED LION FESTIVAL
Whilst on the subject of The Red Lion, Goldenhill, licensee Gwyn Davies is proposing to have a mini beer festival in the month of February
Already Gwyn keeps four cask ale's on permanently, i.e. Ind Coope Burton Ale, Tetley Bitter, Thwaites Bitter and a changing guest, but for February he is having another couple of as yet unknown guests on in addition.
CARTER OPEN
The Jolly Carter, Dalehall Burslem, which closed last year, is now open again selling Marston's Pedigree and Gray's Bitter.
SILVER BIRCH OPEN
After being closed for a long time The Silver Birch, Church Street Silverdale, has reopened, and sells Draught Bass.
FURLONG FIRE
The Furlong, Tunstall has had change of licensee, and has unfortunately suffered a fire in the cellar.
CHESTERS MILD AXED?
Reports are coming in that licensees are being informed that Chesters Dark Mild will no longer be available, and that Whitbread keg mild is being offered in its place. Licensees are urged to try Cain's cask Dark Mild instead.
CUSHION FUNDRAISING
The Cushion, at Latebrook near Goldenhill, donated the £3.50 new year's eve millennium party charges to the Douglas Macmillan Hospice. Together with raffles and the Bonfire party, the Cushion has raised £1,100 for the Dougie Mac, which was presented on 19th January at the pub. Conratulations to Ray and Alma.
BOTTLED BEER MEETING
The Association of Bottled Beer Collectors will be holding a meeting at the Blue Bell, Hardingswood, Kidsgrove on Saturday 12th February, at 11 am. Any bottled beers or brewery related items can be brought along for appraisal and valuation.
OBITUARY
Mrs. Betty Buckley, former landlady of the Golden Cup, Hanley, sadly died on January 4th, aged 87. Mrs. Buckley donated the Pub of the Month purpetual trophy (the barrel) to the branch on 1st July 1980. She will be sadly missed.
