Chapter 21
The first night in Colorado I stayed in a tiny little dot on the map called Holly, which is just inside the border with Kansas. I had tea at a restaurant called "Porky's" which was quite good actually. Anyway, the one thing that sticks in my mind about this town is a real zealous cop. As I drove in to town he pulled over a car about 200 yards in front of me for speeding -- it was just like a scene from a movie -- a small town speed trap manned by a real hick cop with alligator skin boots, hip sun glasses and a toothpick in the corner of his mouth...
I found the town's only motel and as I was heading down to "Porky's" I noticed the same cop hiding behind a billboard next to the motel. Bingo, he caught somebody driving down the highway from the other direction. Then as I was sitting in the restaurant eating my pork spare ribs and looking out the window the cop had moved back to the other end of town and got somebody else. I guess he moved from one end of town to the other all day long.
There was another wild storm that night as I watched "Joe Kidd" and the news on TV. Jeff Porcaro from Toto died today.
Colorado is surprisingly flat on the eastern side. All you hear/read/see of Colorado is the Rockies/skiing and you assume the whole state is mountainous. Heading north from Holly there's a vast plain as far as the eye can see on both sides of the straight road. I guess that's to be expected as it is next to Kansas.
After leaving Holly I drove along the old Santa Fe Trail, looking at some old sites including Madonna on the Trail at Lamar, Fort Lyon, Bent's Fort which was a major trading post last century, La Junta, Rocky Ford, Punkin Centre, Limon, Strasburg then the Mile High City.
