The ancient town is protected by Medina walls and inside there are shops and stalls where you can haggle for leather ware, silverware and carpets, even colorful secondhand wedding dresses! Don't miss the covered souk (market) of jewelers and tailors. Take time to soak up the atmosphere in the picturesque Place de Caire where you can enjoy the unhurried passes of time over a coffee. Outside the Medina, Mahdia is a working port with good value seafood meals served in the restaurants around the port. Nightlife is low key and tends to be centered around the hotels.
