I have been interested in the fire department ever since I can remember. And when I was six, my parents joined the fire department. My parents have left the department, but my mother is still an emt. And my great-uncle Gene died from the results of inhaling ammonia gases at a fire in Boston. We have his fire ax.
When my mother goes to a call, I hope that she will come home OK. I think that she's very brave. I trust that she will be all right, because I know the members of the department all take care of each other.
I can remember my grandfather telling me a story about the time when, as a Boston cop, he went to a fire. It used to be their job to go into the building without any air packs or anything to try to rescue people. They changed the law about that while he was on vacation, and a firefighter came up to him while he was ready to go into the building and stopped him. He was glad they passed the law. You can read about the Boston Police Department here.
