Saturday 3rds
A 3rd XI devoid of most of
the regular bowling attack struggled on a difficult and
unpredictable surface against an experienced Thames Ditton side
who took full advantage of the difficult batting conditions to
rout us by 8 wickets. Put into bat, it was imperative to make a
good score to give us a chance. Frankly, we didn't apply
ourselves at all and despite a battling 31 from Tahir, only one
other batsman made double figures. Five ducks (three of them
golden) didn't help either as we slumped from 43-2 to 60-9,
eventually posting a total of 79 all out. It was never going to
be enough and despite the efforts of Stuart, Mano and Tahir with
the ball, Thames Ditton past our total with the loss of only 2
wickets.

Omens were good when we turned up without Leigh again, as it was hoped the sniper would stay away. For the second week in a row the team were left a player short, so we borrowed a passing Shepperton 1st XI player called Ted, who threatened to be our own Jonty Rhodes. G's lost the toss, but the oppo found it again. Polytechnic chose to bat first, and posted a slowfire 200 for 4. G's struggled to take wickets, Gus seeming to bowl for 200 overs. It was obviously a day for campanology, as Zimmerlingadingdong took 3 wickets, with only a couple others falling before their declaration. Yet again G's fielding was dire, and a bleak day was confirmed when the tennis players failed to lose a ball.
Teas were excellent, scones most appreciated by all. Australia provided good entertainment by losing their WC match.
Roy and Ted opened, Roy bleeding over his new gloves after getting a short one from their quickie - or was it getting a quickie from their short one? Charlie batted well again, I ran myself out expecting G's standard fielding, and we failed to post a hundred in reply. The best scoring came from the oppo's scorer. The Sundays have now played 3, and lost 3. Is it a slow start, or slump?
