...coming soon - 2000 tournament results! 1999 Golf Tournament Results Mens Opening Day Tournament (March 20th): This is a four man team tournament. I played with Tom Minor, Rex Brietz, and Ron Edwards. A pretty strong foursome on most normal days. The only problem was this was early in the year and none of us played exceptionally well. In fact, Rex and myself led the team with our play. Overall the team fininshed in the upper third (a couple of shots out of the money). Spring Member/Member (March 27th-28th): This year I played once again with my brother Rex Brietz. Unlike last year I played well and my brother did not play all that well. After the first day we were leading our flight and also leading many of the other flights. Rex and I "Brother-in-lawed" it very well, the first day. However, the problem with two day tournaments is that when your leading after day one you never seem to hold the lead or play as well in day two. This was the case with the two of us. Jay once again played well and I even played decent but we just couldn't put it together. We finished second in the net division of our flight which was disappointing but not a bad start to the season. The Park Cup (May 15th-16th): This tournament is similar to a Ryder Cup event in that the field is split into two teams. The first day you play a two-man best ball 18-hole match in the morning and in the afternoon you play an alternating shot match. Then on Sunday it is individual matches. My team won this year and I played well (85 and 86 - in the two matches that I played my own ball). Match play is a great format, but trying on the nerves. In the singles match on Sunday, I beat Donald Kurtz 4&2 (up 4 with 2 holes to play). I played really well this day (1 over through 7 holes and 5 over through 16 holes). It was a fun tournament, and I was glad to be able to help the team this year! Gaston CC - Member-Guest (June 5-6): Don Walser invited me to play in Gaston's member-guest this year. This is a two man best ball format. I felt really good about the tournament, because I had been playing great (especially for my handicap). Well, the practice round was a nightmare. The greens were incredibly fast and the pins seemed to be on the sides of hills. The first day, Don and I both played really well, however, we unfortunately both played bad on a couple of holes. After the first day, we were only about 5 shots of the lead, and felt good about the 2nd day. However, neither of us played as well the second day. We started on the back nine the second day, and we never could get anything going. We ended up 2 shots out of the money, which was very frustrating, because we both could have played better. Even if we had brother-in-lawed it better, we could have gotten into the money. Hopefully, we can try again next year! Myers Park Pro Am (June 8th-9th): This year, I played with a local pro (Chris Tucker) from Charlotte National. Chris and I played on the same team in last year's Pro-Am. Also on my team was Russ Kornegay and Phillip Greene. We really felt going in, that we had an excellant chance to win or finish in the top five. The first day of our tournament I did not play as well as I would have liked. Again, I had had been playing well coming into the tournament and I think that I was pressing a little too much. The rest of my team did very well (Chris shot 73 and and Russ shot 68). On day two, I played much better and Chris played better. Chris shot a 69 and Russ shot a 73. Phillip hurt his back after the first round (he says that it is not from having to carry the team on the first day!), but his game was certainly affected by his bad back. The team improved on our score for the first day by one, which I felt was a good accomplishment, considering we were playing with an injured player. Overall, the finished tied for 12th out of fifty teams. Still in the money, but not as high high as well had expected. This tournament is always fun and one I look forward to every year. June Member/Guest Day (June 23rd): As it turned out this was a four man best-ball gross/net tournament (it is usually a two man format). I played with my brother (Rex), Don Walser and Bill Wilhelm (both from Gaston CC). Again, we felt like we had a great team and a great chance to win. We started slow, which is not good in this format. We had several putts that stayed right on the lip or just short. As it turns out out we shot 72 (gross) and 57 (net), and we finished 2 shots out of the money. After the round we counted 6 shots that we left out there. Rex played really well (he shot 82 with 3 birdies). The rest of us played right to our handicap. We had a lot of fun, even though we did not win. Firecracker Tournament (July 3rd): The firecracker tournament is played each year over the fourth of July weekend. It has always been one of my favorites, since it was the first tournament that I won as a member back in 1994. The format is four man best ball gross and net combined (can use the same ball for both scores). The computer selects the teams, so that each team has an A, B, C, and D players. My team this year was Joe Okey, Scott Bortz, Jim Wilkins and me. I have to say we all played very well. Joe was a 9 handicap (shot 74), Scott was an 11 handicap (shot 79), I was a 14 handicap (shot 74) and Jim was an 18 handicap (shot 89). So, we all shot under our handicap. On a combined basis our team shot a 117 (27-under par). We won by four shots, and I had the round on my life. By the way, I followed up my 74 with a 75 on Sunday -- what a great weekend of golf!!! The President's Cup (July 23-24): This is a two-day member/guest tournament (best ball gross and net - both days). Again this year, my playing partner was Todd Allison (10-handicap). On the first day, Todd and I both played very good rounds - we both shot 78 (I'm a 11-handicap at this point). After the first day we were only three shots out of the overall lead. On the second day, we played 15 holes before the event was cancelled due to lightning (one bolt hit about 150 yards from the shelter we were under - it ripped the bark right off of one of the pine trees). Anyway, we finished first in our flight for the lowest gross and got some credit in the pro shop! The Club Championship (September 4-6): The Club Championship tournament is played over Labor Day weekend, and this year I played in the Championship flight. In the Championship flight, we play from the back tees and the format is 3-day stroke play with a cut after the second day. Prior to the tournament, my handicap had dropped down to a 7, and I was playing some good golf. However, the week before the tournament I started slipping back to some old habits. The first day I started off double, triple, double and my tournament was over. However, I did play well on the back. Most of the scores that day were very high, and I really had a shot (although slim) of making the cut. The second day did not get much better, and the last nine holes we played through the reminents of Hurricane Dennis (wind and a very hard rain). The last three holes I literally could not grip the clubs. So, my tournament was over on Sunday. It was a great experience playing with the caliber of this competition, and I learned that I still have a ways to go towards improving my game. Member-Guest (October 1-2): This is another two-day member/guest tournament where we play a round robin (9-hole matches) against the other five teams in the flight. In addition to golf, there are several great parties including a band on the second night. My guest this year was Todd Allison (same guest as the Presidents Cup). We started out really strong winning our first match 8-2 (best ball gross between us was a 35). However, the second match, we played about as poorly as we could. We both blew up on the same holes and we lost our focus toward the end. We lost that match 71/2 to 2 1/2 (shooting a best ball 44...Ouch). The last three matches we played well shooting best ball 36, 36, and 37...winning each of the three matches (6-4, 6 1/2 - 3 1/2, and 7 1/2 - 2 1/2). We ended up with a total of 30 1/2 points, which was 1 point behind the leaders (the only team that beat us). I guess that is the breaks, but we sure felt disappointed with that one round. To this day, Todd and I cannot believe that we shot 44 best ball. We still had a great time and we did come in second place for total points on the second day. Member - Member (October 18-19): This is a 2-day tournament where we play 2-man captain's choice the first day and modified alternate shot the second day. Last year, my brother and I won this tournament after a horrible first day (see 1998 Tournaments - Below). I have to admit, I'm not a big fan of captain's choice tournaments. Captain's choice tournaments tend to favor those teams that can putt well and hit iron shots close. Anyone that has played a round of golf with me knows that I am a scrambler. I hit the ball in the woods and find a way to make par. In captains choice, the two of us struggled all day. Both of us drove the ball fairly well, but neither of us could get the ball close to the pin after that. We ended up shooting a 73 on the first day with a couple of bogies coming in. However, we were in the wrong flight (a group in the flight shot a 65, which was better than anybody in the flight ahead of us).
My 1998 MPCC Tournament Results: Spring Member/Member (March 28-29): I played with my brother, and we finished about middle of our flight. Rex played well, but I struggled (too early in the season!). The Park Cup (April 18-19): This tournament is similar to a Ryder Cup event in that the field is split into two teams. The first day you play a two-man best ball 18-hole match in the morning and in the afternoon you play an alternating shot match. Then on Sunday it is individual matches. My team lost, but I played well (83 and 81 - in the two matches that I played my own ball). Match play is a great format, but trying on the nerves. Pro-Am (June 17-18): This is a great tournament to play, and I look forward to playing each year. This year I got paired with Chris Tucker (Chris has played on the PGA Tour), Mike Jones and Dan Cottingham. The format for this tournament is that you take the best gross score and best net score (two separate balls) and combine those score to get your score on each hole. Our first day started slow (only 1-under on our first 9-holes), but we finished strong (going 11-under on our last 9-holes). On the second day, we played great (the team shot 19-under for the day), and we finished in 4th place overall. On the second day, Dan shot 75 (with 9 shots) and I shot 81 (with 16 shots). It's always fun when you play well! The President's Cup (July 24-25): This is a two-day member/guest tournament (best ball gross and net - both days). This year, my playing partner was Todd Allison (9-handicap). On the first day, Todd played a solid round - he shot 80; I played one of my best rounds of the year - I shot 79 (I'm a 14-handicap at this point). On the second day, I had the solid round (84), while Todd shot lights out. Todd shot a 70, with a bogey on the last hole. We finished the tournament one shot behind the overall winners (Dan Cottingham/Alan Craven) and we won our flight by about 5 shots. Again it's always fun when you play well!!! The Club Championship (August 24-25): This is a
three day tournament that is all match play (unless you lose a match). In the first round
I had a tough match, with ironically the same guy who knocked me out in 1997. I was three
up with three to go and my opponent played the last three holes two-under. I lost on the
first playoff hole. I was shocked, but not that upset. I played well, shooting an 81, but
it just was not in the cards for me. Once you are eliminated, there is a points
tournament. I won the points tournament on the first day and finished about 6th on the
second day.
