Lindros Says NO!!!
August 1st, today, was the deadline for Eric Lindros to sign the qualifying offer the Flyers submitted to him back on June 30. He has let the deadline pass by not signing the contract. He is now a restricted free agent and apparently will test the free agency market. However, the Flyers still reserve the right to match, but hopefully they won't.
Lindros, as you may recall, is expected to miss the first 3-4 months of the season.

Flyers Sign Plante
The Philadelphia Flyers today have signed 29 year old centerman Derek Plante to a one year contract. Plante last season played for the Dallas Stars (you may remember him as a Buffalo Sabre) before being traded along with D Kevin Dean to the Chicago Blackhawks late last season for defenesmen Sylvain Cote and Dave Manson. Plante, despite struggling for the past two seasons, has a lot of speed and a scoring touch that will fill the Flyers void for a third line center created after Eric Lindros's banishment from the team and Daymond Langkow's promotion to the second line.
Also today, plenty of other teams were active in the free agency market. The Dallas Stars signed former Flyers D Jeff Tory. Vancouver signed G Bob Essensa from the Coyotes. And the Calgary Flames sigend RW Dave Lowry from the Sharks.

Delmore Resigned
Flyers today resigned restricted free agent defenseman Andy Delmore to a two year contract. Delmore came up with the Flyers late last season, from the Flyers AHL affiliates the Philadelphia Phantoms, earing a spot with his offensive mobility which the Flyers lacked at the time. Delmore flourished in the playoffs, scoring two goals in game three of the semi-finals and scoring three goals in game five to become the first rookie defenseman in the playoffs to score a hat-trick, ever, in the NHL.

Chicago Signs Valeri
Former Flyers left wing Valeri Zelepukin has signed with the Chicago Blackhawks. Zelepukin was acquired by the Flyers early in the 98-99 season, where he provided a scoring threat on the Flyers third line. He barely scored this past year, as you may remember, much to the disappointment of the Flyers. His presence will surely help the Blackhawks not make the playoffs again this season.

Cechmanek Signed
Flyers today signed their sixth round pick in this year's draft, goaltender Roman Cechmanek to a one year deal with an option for a second. Cechmanek will now come to the NHL after refusing to do so when originally drafted by the Montreal Canadiens a few years back. He is expected to back up Brian Boucher, who would have been backed up by prospect great Maxime Oullet, had the Flyers been unable to sign Cechmanek.

Clarke's Last Laugh?
Just released were some of the terms of Eric Lindros's proposed qualifying offer contract in which an interesting little detail was discovered. The contract, under a techinicality of NHL regulations, allows the Flyers to only pay Lindros $85,000 a year if he is demoted to the AHL Philadelphia Phantoms, which the Flyers may do by their own will alone. So if Eric signs or doesn't sign, the Flyers will pony up virtually nothing in return.
Also, today in Flyer news, the Flyers signed D Brad Tiley, a top AHL defenseman formerly of the Phoenix Coyotes. Also, defenseman Adam Burt, formerly of the Flyers, has signed with the Atlanta Thrashers.

Flyers Acquire RW Hull
Today the Flyers have resigned RW Jody Hull to a one year contract. Hull has been with the Flyers the past two seasons, and was re-acquired by the Flyers earlier last season after being claimed by the Atlanta Thrashers in the expansion draft, where he was demoted from the NHL.

Chief
Just last night Flyers enforcer Craig Berube signed a one year deal with the Washington Capitals. Craig Berube, as you remember, helped the Flyers clinch their third and last victory in the Eastern Conference finals with a goal late in the third period. He was acquired by the Flyers for a fourth round pick at the trade deadline in 1999.

Flyers Sign Dopey
Well, they could have signed Gary Roberts, a gritty winger who can still score quite a few. They could have signed Shayne Corson, or even playoff pest Claude Lemieux. But your Philadelphia Flyers chose to sign former New York Rangers left wing Kevin Stevens
to a one year contract, who came off a struggling performance last year, only scoring eight points in 38 games. Stevens is a big left winger and a veteran producer in the regular season and in the playoffs. But, of course, you'll remember him from midway through last season, when he was caught in a motel room with a prostitute and some crack. The Flyers feel he can overcome these difficulties and hopefully he will. He is best friends with Flyers Mark Recchi and Rick Tocchet-can't wait to see what escapades he'll bring to our two star right wingers.
Also active in the free agency market today were the New York Rangers, who signed former New Jersey Devil defenseman Vladimir Malakhov.

Flyers Resign Tocchet
Flyers right wing Rick Tocchet, who was acquired March 8 from Phoenix in exchange for Mikael Renberg, was resigned today for 2 years. Tocchet was glad to re-sign, hoping to help out again in the division with his mucking and grinding. Tocchet scored 15 goals and 20 assists this past season and was a vital part in the Flyers offense against the New Jersey Devils in the Eastern Conference finals before the Flyers eventual collapse and loss of the series.

Flyers Sign Defenseman
Today the Flyers signed defenseman Michal Sykora to a multiyear contract. Sykora is a 6-5, 225 pound, twenty seven year old defenseman who took the past year off the NHL to play with Sparta Praha of the Czech Republic Elite League where he had great success, scoring 11 goals and 14 assists in 48 games. Sykora has had difficulty maintaining spots in the NHL, last playing for the Tampa Bay Lightning. The move suggests a future trade in the works as the Flyers have an overload of decent defensemen and will have to deal one to make room. They have six good defensmen in Desjardins, McGillis, Delmore, Richardson, Therien, and Eaton, in addition to prospect Mikhail Chernov who is expected to be ready to play in the NHL this season.

Barber Named Assistant
Today, after years of speculation and hope by many Flyer fans, Flyer legend Bill Barber landed a job on the Flyers coaching staff as an assistant coach. Barber, as most of you know, was the beloved coach who soared with the Flyer's AHL affiliates, the Philadelphia Phantoms, and coached them through four great winning season's including a Calder Cup Championship in 1998. Barber will replace former assistant coach Wayne Cashman, who left for a job with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Barber accepts the job under a multi-year contract, unable to find the head coaching job in the NHL he hoped for, and opted to remain with the Flyers for the time being. If a preferable head coaching job opens up for Barber, Flyers president Bob Clarke said he will not impede Barber in accepting.
