Retirement of a Legend.

Now before I really get into this I want to make one thing clear. Dominik is NOT retiring because of the Brett Hull goal, and all that controversey. He feels it's his time to retire, and that's the reason. Not anything else.
Ok now that I got that out of the way, on with the rest of this section!!

July 29, 1999, Prauge, Czech Republic- Dominik Hasek made the announcement that he will be retiring after the 1999-2000 season. The reason? "'I decided to retire because of my friends and my family."'Once I take off my equipment for the last time, that's going to be forever,' Hasek said.
He wants his children to live the Czech life. He found it very upsetting when he noticed his son spoke Czech with an english accent, and his children (Michal,9 and Dominika, 4) were finding it more and more difficult to adapt to Czech life. And every year it didn't seem to be getting any better. He had started making his decision about retiring about nine months before his announcement.
Another reason for his retirement is the media. He's tired of living behind a wall. He doesn't enjoy all the media attention and finds it overwhelming at times. He's a very private person and finds that he gets none of that. He's hoping once he retires everything will be peaceful and quiet.
The reason he made this announcement now was so that it "wouldn't be a distraction to my teammates", he also said he made the announcement now to give the fans time to deal with his leaving.
He, however, isn't leaving because he doesn't like America, or the sport. He loves competition, and America, but he feels it is time for him to focus on his family, and let his children live the Czech life and appreciate their heritage. It's not about money either. If it was, he would play out the rest of his contract, which has two more years on it. "Once I take off my equipment for the last time, that's going to be forever," Hasek said. But don't think he has given up on competing. He's started his own clothing line, called "The Dominator", and recently wrote a book, that is only being published in Czech right now.
