Gangsters

Part twelve

"Chris and Billy have just been arrested," Said Lissa, "For killing Fingers." She started to sob.

"What!" exclaimed Linzi and Craig jumping to their feet.

"One of the porters at the speak is saying that they weren't there." Sissy explained. "Which they weren't, obviously, but everyone else is saying they were."

"Which porter?" asked Craig.

"Joseph Getti." Said Lissa between sobs. Craig took off for the house.

"I have a plan." Smiled Sissy. Not a nice smile. Ten minutes later the three girls walked into the house, looking innocent. Sissy immediately phoned her father at his restaurant. Linzi and Lissa hung around impatiently until Gianni returned, with Chris and Billy, from posting their bail.

"Papa, I know this isn't the ideal time," she said smiling up at him, "But Signor Argolia has invited you all to dine at his restaurant today."

"What reason?" asked Gianni smiling back at his daughter.

"To celebrate the engagements of your son and daughter," smiled Linzi, "A sort of 'Last Supper' for the men, he said." Gianni roared with laughter.

"Then we will be there." He stated.

As the men of the Marchessi family were eating Linzi, Lissa and Sissy were pulling up outside one of the speakeasies owned by Gianni. Linzi spoke quietly with the manager. He nodded and beckoned Joseph over.

"A package was left here last night," he told Joseph, "Go and see if it has been thrown away. The young ladies will go with you to identify the package." Grumbling Joseph lead the way to the huge bins in the back yard. As he leant in the first one to start his search Linzi withdrew a pistol from her purse. Lissa looked at her watch. On cue the trolley car rattled past, bells ringing. Under the cover of it's noise Linzi quickly shot Joseph Getti in the temple. He died instantly. As he slumped over the bin Lissa and Sissy grabbed a leg each and bundled him in. As the three girls passed through the restaurant the owner hurried over to them.

"Be assured I never saw you here," he said, "I keep the code of Omerta not like that son of a bitch." He spat on the floor. Linzi smiled at him.

"Thank you." She said.

The men were half way through their main course when the girls arrived. More food was quickly brought. The police turned up as coffee was being served. The sergeant cleared his throat nervously and informed Gianni of the demise of Joseph Getti. Gianni spread his hands wide and gestured to the table.

"We have been here all afternoon. Besides who here would hurt our good friend Joseph." The men around the table all shook their heads. Linzi had buried her head on Billy's shoulder and her shoulders were shaking.

"As you can see he was like a member of the family." He said. Linzi looked up at the policeman her eyes swimming with tears.

"He was like an uncle to me" she said her bottom lip trembling. The police excused themselves and left.
