It's a thin line

Part nine

Mel stared concernedly at Linzi as she dried her hair.

"Let me get this straight," said Mel, "Some guy has sent you flowers, chocolates, cuddly toys, all the trimmings. You don't know who it is and you're going on a date with him."

"Yes." said Linzi, setting down the hair dryer and getting out her make up bag.

"Am I the only one who sees something wrong with this?" complained Mel, "Anything could happen to you. You have no idea what this guy is like or where you're going." Linzi pouted.

"I think it'll be fun." she said. Mel raised her eyebrows.

"Oh yeah, great fun being raped, murdered, assaulted or whatever else this guy wants to do."

"On the other hand I might enjoy myself."

"I give up."

"Good. How do I look?"

Outside in the car park Rey wasn't having much more success with Billy.

"This is a crazy idea. The poor girl has lost her memory. How she's gonna feel when she gets it back." Billy's face was stubborn.

"I'll take the chance. Just keep Mel busy. She'd never let me do this."

Linzi stepped out into the cool night air. In her hand was the note she'd found pushed under her door. It read 'Corny I know, but I'll be waiting outside with a red rose." She checked her watch wondering how long she'd have to wait. Billy approached her.

"Hi," he said, "What are you doing out here?"

"I'm waiting for someone." she told him. Billy pulled a rose out of his jacket.

"I think you may have found him." Linzi laughed as she accepted the rose.

"So where are you taking me?" She asked. Billy opened his car door.

"It's a surprise."

Rey felt uneasy as he sat in his room trying to watch telly. He was wishing that Billy had never talked him into this crazy plan of his. Rey flicked channels stopping at the news. A story about a crazed lover was killing his girl-friend. He switched the telly off and made his way quickly to Mels room.
