Pain Tolerance - September 27

Monday’s here, and it’s time for Pain Tolerance, so here’s this week’s column underway, for another edition. This edition will include a WWF Unforgiven review, Smackdown thoughts, Vince McMahon as WWF champion, and Taz in WWF.

Well, WWF Unforgiven was last night, the third pay-per-view, of the month. Was it good? Which pay-per-view was better? Well, I’d have to say, this pay-per-view was really below average for the WWF. ECW’s Anarchy Rulz, was definitely the pay-per-view of the month. Anyway, at Unforgiven, there were some good spots that went down, but some of the angles the WWF is trying to pull of, seem rather just plain stupid.

Val Venis Vs. Steve Blackman - I’m actually surprised Venis won this one, it looks as though the WWF realizes Blackman is not anywhere near a superstar, so, might as well get a few jobs in on him, before you start something new with him. This feud may continue, but I don’t see it going far, since Val Venis, isn’t over with the crowd, as much as he should be, the main problem is the WWF uses him off and on, and then most fans lose interest quickly.

Mark Henry Vs. D-Lo Brown - This match was overrated. What did you really expect from Mark Henry? He has one agile move, where he jumps on his opponent’s back, and slips right through the middle rope and top rope. That’s it. Everything else is irish whip, avalanche, body slam, clothesline. D-Lo Brown goes over Henry and wins the European title, for the third time? Too bad they have D-Lo wasting away with the Euro title, when he is a legitimate contender for the Intercontinental title. Give the European title, to someone who is in desperate need of getting over. Gangrel could certainly use it. Maybe Val Venis, or even Stevie Richards.

Jeff Jarrett vs. Chyna - Actually a pretty well worked match, not really scientific, or a wrestling skills match, more of a flat out brawl, with the odd flurry of wrestling holds mixed it. Sea-saw match up all the way through, but one missed spot, or at least a screw up on the camera angle had to be when Jarrett went for the slingshot on Chyna, into the corner, which ended up knocking out the referee. If you were the ref, you would have seen that coming a mile away, unfortunately, this is pro wrestling, and the matches are choreographed, so just a bad slip by the WWF production crew their. Mae Young and Moolah making Jarrett into a human punching bag was hilarious, but the WWF has gotten a lot of heat for allowing Jarrett to strike non athletic women. Well, from what has transpired, I’d think it’s a safe bet, that we may be seeing a handy cap match with Young/Moolah Vs. Jarrett at WWF No Mercy, the next WWF pay-per-view. When Debra came out with the guitar, I was actually yelling at my tv, I thought for sure, Chyna was WWF Intercontinental Champ. But, unfortunteatly, the WWF came up with a lame way to get the title off her, INSTANT REPLAY! Look, I don’t mind if your going to be far, and are going to use instant replay, but USE IT FOR EVERY MATCH!

Dudley Boyz Vs. Acoltyes - Boring match in my book, only good thing here was the comical Steve Richards. He had the UPN symbol on his chest, to be like an Acoltye, that was a nice touch, by the WWF. Richards, is a great talent, and it may be funny to see the guy do these parodies, but it’s sad to see such a skilled talent, being dragged in the mud.

Luna Vs. Ivory - I’m very pleased with the outcome of this match. I thought for sure, Ivory would be Ex-WWF Champion. Only thing is, WHAT’S NEXT? They had her clean pin Tori, and then basically snatch a win from Luna. What I wouldn’t mind seeing, would be a 4 way Hardcore elimination Women’s Championship match. Luna Vs. Jaqueline Vs. Tori Vs. Ivory. That would be a pretty interesting match. If the WWF, would actually get enough women, they could even hold a battle royal, to decide the number one contender, who would face the winner of the four way hardcore match. Would be a good way to introduce new talent for the division.

Edge/Christian Vs. New Age Outlaws - What can you say? The reformation of the Outlaws has WCW written all over it. Are you sure, there are no WCW bookers sneaking into the WWF creative team’s meetings? There’s something interesting. WCW calls their bookers, the Booking Committee, or Championship Committee, while the WWF has the "Creative Team". This match would have been a lot better if Edge and Christian had of snuck would with the WWF titles. Even if it was only for one week, or less and they lost them in a 4 corners match on Smackdown!, or even jobbed them back to NAO, if the WWF is so insistent about the Outlaws.

Al Snow Vs. Bossman - This has my nomination as WORST MATCH OF THE YEAR. It truly sucked. They maybe had 2 minutes of actual fighting, and all it was, was blocking each other’s escapes and taking cheap shots from Snow’s bag of goodies. And why did Head make his reappearance? By the way, the dogs did nothing, but bark at each other. It would have been better if they had of tied eachof the four dogs to each ring post, and left the dog trainers OUTSIDE, and not inside the cage. What was up with that? The dogs didn’t even have a chance, to sink their teeth into Bossman or Snow, because the trainers were holding them back.

Xpac Vs. Chris Jericho - I really enjoyed this match, just pure athleticism, with some brawling mixed in. The fans in attendance didn’t even pay attention to the match. Really sucked, to see the fans, to busy watching a fight or whatever was up in the rafters, rather than some quality wrestling, put out by the WWF believe it or not. I guess most WWF fans, would rather see massive bumps, and other things, rather than a good wrestling match.

Six Pack Challenge - Not a lot to talk about here, it was a great match, Bulldog, was selling like mad, didn’t get any offense in except a wobble-running power slam on the Big Show, believe it or not. That was amazing. Really a test on his back. The Rock didn’t do a whole lot, except in one shot, he got screwed out of a three count, but hey, so did Big Show. The referee’s snapping was hilarious, never seen a bunch of referees go crazy like that, and then Austin runs over and beats the hell out of them all, just classic. Triple H wins with a pedigree on The Rock. I can’t believe it was a CLEAN PIN. Hopefully Triple H will retain the title tonight on RAW.

Smackdown! is really becoming the WWF’s main show it seems, they are trying to build both shows as equal, but they continue to set up angles on RAW, and finish them on Smackdown! Still pretty good I guess. The gauntlet Triple H had to go through was great. Good to see him work his talent in different aspects against different opponents. Did anyone really think that the gauntlet wouldn’t have came down to a 2-2 streak, with the last match remaining? Turning Bulldog heel. I do not know what the thought behind that was, hopefully we will find out maybe tonight on RAW? Chris Jericho, is just so entertaining to watch. Him showing up in the hockey gear was pretty comical. I do not know why he has Curtis Hughes, the guy really sucks. They need to get him a follower, not a bodyguard. The Howard Finkel bit was funny.

The WWF giving Vince McMahon the title, well I just don’t know. I knew we would see it one day, but the way they brought him back was just so stupid, With Austin and the little disclaimer in the contract, to Vince proclaiming he was there on personal business, and not WWF business. Just not very wise. The match on Smackdown with Triple H Vs. McMahon was pretty well done, saved face for HHH, but it still made him look bad, losing the title to the owner of the World Wrestling Federation.

That’s it for this week. I’ll be back next Monday with another Pain Tolerance column. Until then, thanks for reading and have a good night.
