Pain Tolerance - October 4

Pain Tolerance is back for this Monday evening, with some huge things going down the past week end, and the next few days. Tonight’s column will, have my reaction the recent shock waves of Vince Russo leaving the WWF for the competition, WCW. Monday night thoughts from last week and the failed gimmick of the week to finish it all off.

Well, Vince Russo is going to WCW. WHAT?! How can this guy, sit back, in multiple interviews, and just trash WCW to hell, and praise the WWF as if it as priceless gold, and then all of a sudden, sign a contract with WCW and head south?!

Tonight, when I logged onto the internet, I first went to an opinions board on a site, and read multiple posts about Russo signing with the WWF. First I thought, what kind of a prank is that? Who would be dumb enough to post that. But, out of curiosity, I went to the top-rope newsboard, and read the same thing, at this point, I’m beginning to think, okay what kind of joke is that. Why would the guy that has been so loyal to McMahon for so many years, and have the freedom he has backstage, all of a sudden pack his bags and head to WCW. I decided to check out 1wrestling, and sure enough there’s a write up there. At this point, it began sinking in a bit, but I still wasn’t convinced, one last stop would prove it. WWF.com, and sure enough there’s a simple message there.  Well, what do I do know, thinking this was a work by the WWF, trying to outsmart their fans, or give them a chill down their spines, I decided the site that would prove this bit true or not, would be WCW.com. What do I find? An advertisement to chat with Ed Ferrara and Vince Russo, the NEW WCW Creative team members.

What’s a word to describe this matter? Shocking? Greed? Sell-out? All of them really do relate to this story some way or another. Shocking as in, after hearing him trash WCW for so many years, and then going ahead and signing with them. Another thing I found interesting, and which really makes this hard to believe for me is, just last week, September 30, wrestleline.com’s Ben Miller had a VERY interesting interview with Vince Russo, and they discussed everything from his past to his feelings on Japan wrestling, to WWF modern, and past and even WCW. I find the date of this interview most compelling. September 30? Thursday of last week? And when did he sign the contract with WCW? Saturday afternoon. You mean to tell me, the guy either kayfabed his way through the interview, or he all of a sudden changed his mind, jumped on a plane the next day, and signed a two year contract with WCW, the company he has trashed for years? Just doesn’t add up for me. Seems rather peculiar that he did this interview, praising the WWF, and saying he was loyal and grateful to McMahon, and then turns his back on him?

Vince McMahon has to be scared. Seriously scared. This just doesn’t affect his WWF wrestling magazines, which Russo was Editor of, both RAW and WWF Magazine, but the guy was the head of the creative team in the WWF. And with the following rumors spreading of Ed Ferrara leaving too, what can be going on backstage at RAW this evening. It’s live tonight. Will Lawler and Ross mention it? Will the changes in the booking be changed tonight, or will the WWF follow through on the plans Russo laid out for this week. Also, with the addition of the top two writers for the WWF, to the WCW crew. What will become of Nitro, Thunder and Saturday Night? Will Russo allow Jimmy Hart to continue his new path with Saturday night? What will happen to Craig Leathers and others who took in the responsibility of booking WCW.

Just so many questions. I’ve read a new interview with Russo that was done earlier today by Micasa at wrestleline, but Russo wouldn’t get into any details whatsoever, and kept repeating that he was only going to WCW because he wanted out of the WWF, because of the long work. Also, he repeatedly made it clear the money factor had no dealing in his decision. Bull. I guarantee you, if he had of told Vince he was signing with WCW, and Vince countered with a slightly higher price than WCW, Russo would have signed the dotted line and stayed with WWF. I just don’t know how this will work out. I do not see the Russo leaving for WCW, to play a factor, until late December, maybe even into January. Since the WWF has loyal fans who will watch no matter what, and if they happen to flick over to WCW and see something interesting, it may take a few weeks for them to finally begin watching Nitro.

Another thing that has crossed my mind would be, what direction will Russo be heading WCW into? He has proven in the WWF that he gives what the fans want, and right now, skits and mic work are what is popular. Not the wrestling aspect. Or at least not in the WWF. How will Russo adapt to this new found flock of viewers who prefer the wrestling more than the entertainment. Or will he try and combine both, and lead WCW in to a new direction.

Well, last week, before the entire Vince Russo fiasco happened, WWF put on one of the most controversial segments on RAW, it was not controversial as in bending the censors, but rather, I have heard so many people chew the WWF out on this segment, and then there a very few people who enjoyed it. I really liked the segment, it was hilarious all the way through. I’ll admit the clown was a let down, but nonetheless, seeing The Rock ask her, for her name, and shooting his newest phrase back at her was funny to see. This past week’s RAW was really a let down in the wrestling aspect of the show. Four matches, I believe, which in the end, 4 of the 6 ended with a DQ decision and the only matches that actually had a winner was the Battle Of the Sexes, with Chyna pinning Jarrett, and the evening gown match, with Moolah tearing Ivory’s dress off. Which really doesn’t count, since your basically guaranteed a winner of the match.

Nitro, nothing really interesting. Another dumb angle to get Hogan out of wrestling. Why does Hogan need to be included in every Nitro, if he’s not even gonna wrestle? And only come out in the last few seconds, and "save" his team, after he abandons them.

Failed Gimmick of the Week, is back after a few weeks off. This week’s unquestionable Failed Gimmick of the Week, has to be, Psychosis losing his mask on Nitro to Kidman. Why is WCW so incredibly insistent and driven to remove all of the luchadors masks? It was Bischoff’s idea to begin with, but it was continued on after he has left. Why? Now, Psychosis will get a month and a half push, and then be dropped back to low mid card status.
