Pain Tolerance - December 20

Back One - Main Page - Next Column

This week’s Pain Tolerance is now online. The feds have been slowly heating back up again, which is good news. Hope you all enjoyed the pay-per-view last night and got your money’s worth. Tonight’s column will include Starrcade thoughts, a lot of ranting and raving, haven’t done much of that as of late but I feel the need to let out a few things, the "new" Thunder, and to finish off, as usual, the failed gimmick of the week. Enjoy.

Big Vito and Johnny The Bull vs. Disco Inferno and Lash LeRoux - Well, how many times have we seen this INCREDIBLE, not the sarcasm, match happen? None of these guys compliment the other’s style. Big Vito and The Bull looked pretty pitiful in the ring together, and Lash and Disco, it seems have lost all their heat, especially Disco, who was really looking like he would be elevated or at least pushed. Disco, for some reason hasn’t looked as competitive in recent weeks, he was really impressing me until he got into this Mafia angle. Hopefully the powers that be, will finish this lame feud up tonight on Nitro, and get Disco back into contention. Lash on the other hand, really shouldn’t be that far up on the ladder of success, he basically looks like a younger, untested Jericho. With some work, and fine tuning he could be a lot better then he is now. By the way, how stupid are these guys, these waste a hell of a lot of time getting a body bag, and then finally get Disco in it, carry it to the back, and what do they do? Reopen it, take him out beat on him some more than toss him in a trunk. Really well thought out.

Evan Karagias vs. Madusa - Guess the Hot line rumors of, no longer abusing women was false, or they made an exception for this match. The match it’s self was well done for, who was in the match. Madusa sure took some hard bumps into the steel steps and into the guardrail etc. Even in the ring she took some hard shots. Especially that reverse power bomb by Karagias. He SLAMMED her down to the canvas. The ending with Spice was well scripted, but they could of worked it out a bit better. When Karagias was being seduced by Spice, he wasn’t really even paying attention to her, looking into the crowd, over at the announcers and such. Still a good ending to a disgrace of such a competitive title, that looks like it will become either a parody title, or will be thrown into the trash along with the TV title. So now they have Three singles titles, Heavyweight, U.S. and Hard core, and the Cruiser but no way to tell how long it’ll be around for. Also, with the ending of Spice and Madusa double teaming Karagias to get the title off him, you have to wonder where that will lead to.

Norman Smiley vs. Meng - I like Smiley’s character, I really don’t like him though. With Meng, I really don’t like him either, he should go back to a role sort of like what he was when the Dungeon of Doom was around. The strong, brutal body guard. Probably would be best suited in this case for the powers that be, since right now, they don’t have anyone that could pose a threat. Hennig is more of a Yes Sir man, Creative Control are useless, and the rest are just stuffed in those bits of the Powers That Be, because simply, Russo can’t come up with a decent gimmick for them. Now, the match started off good, as we all SHOULD have expected Smiley to be a total wimp against Meng, but as soon as they went backstage I lost interest. Any backstagematches bore me right off the bat. All it is, is pure brawling which it wasn’t even that. I don’t mind a good technical match with ground holds and take downs, etc. but if I wanted to see two muscled men knock each other’s brain in, I’d watch a boxing match. For some reason, the boxers get carried away and forget their boxers (Tyson biting Holyfield’s ear), and the wrestlers forget where they are and start acting like boxers, (watch any Meng or Dustin Rhodes matches lately?). I think all wrestling bookers need a lesson on one thing. There are two kinds of boo’s, one where you boo the character, because you love to boo the guy and call him names etc. Then there is the boo, where your booing to either stay awake, or because, you really just hate the guy and want him out of the arena now. Candidates for the first boo, Jeff Jarrett, Triple H, Wolfpac. Second type of boo, Bossman, Dustin Rhodes, Fit Finlay, Brian Knobbs, Prince Albert, enough said.

The Revolution vs. Hacksaw Jim Duggan and Three Mystery Partners - Hello, this is the local Senior Home of Care, we are missing three residents, if you have seen them, do not make any sudden eye contact with them, they have not received their shot of Tyenol today. Give me a break, why did Russo bring back the old timers?! This would have been all right for the Heroes of Wrestling pay-per-view a few months back, but get them off my TV NOW! Kevin Sullivan, wow has he aged, those blond hairs he had last time we saw them, have digressed to practically no hair at all. Rick Stiener, probably the youngest out of the three, should really retire. Also, not that this has anything to do with this match, but where has Scott Stiener been, he was said to be back in September, then October, then it just all faded out and haven’t heard anything about him. I wouldn’t mind Scott in WWF. This match wasn’t that BAD, it didn’t take up much time, I wasn’t really paying attention, I was trying to get a look at Kimona.

Dr. Death Steve Williams vs. Vampiro - Oh god, this match was just plain boring. Most of it was just shoulder tackle after shoulder tackle by Dr. Death, finally Vampiro got things going, and ultimately won, when Williams snapped on the ref. Oklahoma, got his, as Vampiro knocked him around with help from the Misfits. Hopefully this means no more Dr. Death. The guy doesn’t wrestle to entertain, he beats to INJURE. Don’t be surprised if you hear of some injuries Vampiro suffered last night, I wouldn’t be surprised.

Creative Control and Curt Henning vs. Harlem Heat and Midnight - So-so match up, nothing much in this match. We just got the same from Creative Control, and the same from Booker T. Looks like instead of wrestling stables, a girl will come between the Harlem Heat brothers this time around.

Jeff Jarrett vs. Dustin Rhodes - Starts off like it was going to be a crap match, but actually turned out to be pretty well done, thanks to the work ethic of Double J, that’s J-E-Double F. J-A-double R-E,double T.

David Flair vs. Diamond Dallas Page - Nothing special about this match, pretty well put on, good touch with DDP winning. Since I live in Canada, and Nitro is edited, this was the first time I saw that gothic girl, so I guess I’ll have to watch to see what transpires.

Sting w/ Elizabeth vs. The Total Package - Usual Luger match. Probably not too many people picked up on what Sting was doing when he gave Liz "his" can of spray, and told her to lose her’s. Pretty funny to see the look on her face when she sprayed him and only silly string came out. Dumb move by the Stinger. Turn your back on a girl you don’t trust, that is holding a baseball bat, oh yeah, couldn’t be any more cautious.

Kevin Nash vs. Sid Vicious - My god, what an idiot referee. Could you get any more dumber? "Yeah, yeah man, I power bombed him, yeah, just ring the bell." Oh boy. All this match did was prolong the feud, you know the face would not let the heel get away with something like that.

Chris Benoit vs. Jeff Jarrett - The best damn match of the night, should of been the last match of the night. These two put on an excellent showing, especially Benoit, who seems to know feed off the emotion of the fans. When he went for the diving head butt, I was literally yelling at the TV to just grab the belt, forget the head butt. But, luckily, Benoit got the diving head butt, to finish Jarrett, then climbed the ladder once more and grabbed the title. This entire match had me sitting on the edge of my seat. In one spot, where Jarrett climbed the ropes, and Benoit was on the top of the ladder, Jarrett drop kicked the ladder, and fell to the canvas, as well as the ladder, but it seemed like ages before Benoit finally came down, and when he did, wow, did he come down hard on his hip. Just a note here, a few columns back, I stated, Jarrett will not do well, and will not be championship material. WOW, did I get a lot of feedback on that stating he was the next big thing. Well, perhaps I stated that wrong. I’ve liked Jarrett’s character, however, I do not see him being championship material specifically in WCW, due to all the backstage politics that still remain, even with the new management. I think if he had of stayed in WWF, even with Austin’s whining, Jarrett would have been pushed to the top. With Austin out now, they really could of used Jarrett as a second top heel, with Triple H and him as the top heels, that would be one competitive championship.

Bret Hart vs. Goldberg - Well, I’m not going to even comment on the ending of this match, it was just totally stupid, and unorganized, and didn’t fit into the recent story lines at all. The match up until the ref was knocked out, was pretty good, a lot more than I expected, since the match had ABSOLUTELY no heat going in.

Well, the Starrcade review is over, time for some ranting! Ooh yeah. First topic is the recent "argument" between Vince McMahon and Chris Jericho. It’s been a few days since it happened, but these types of rumors just annoy me so much. Jericho having a conversation with McMahon, believable, and understandable. McMahon bad mouthing and putting down Jericho’s work and effort? Utter BS. The biggest rumor I have heard to come out of this is, of Kevin Nash asking Triple H to put down and try and hold back Jericho so that way back when Nash was booking WCW and held back Jericho, it doesn’t look so bad on him now. This ties into the whole Kliq deal. Just for the few of you that don’t know the Kliq was and still is, a big backstage group of friends. The most popular of the Kliq are, Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, Shawn Michaels, Triple H and Xpac. Anyway, this entire fight between Jericho and McMahon seems to be too over exaggerated. First, the fans go nuts when Jericho comes out, I think it’s safe to say, he’s got one of the largest fan bases in the WWF. Note I said ONE OF THE LARGEST, not the Largest.  Therefore, obviously he's not letting the company down, he’s getting insane pops, the fans go nuts for his matches, and I’m sure being #3 or so in WWF merchandise sales, doesn’t hurt, when you only got one t-shirt. He’s hurting the company? He’s ruining it’s reputation? Not even a chance.

Now, the next topic is, more of a follow up on a subject I talked about last week. It was, the younger workers on WCW Saturday Night. These guys on WCW Saturday Night, could put some of the top stars to shame in the ring, but the problem is, a guy in black tights with a simple name like Devon Storm won't get over. The creative teams, who are praised for getting big guys like Austin, Bret Hart Goldberg to remain in the spotlight, cannot seem to come up with a decent character for the new, younger talent.

The way I see it, it's destined to have a falling out in the popularity of wrestling. What will happen when guys like Austin, Rock, Hart, Goldberg, Nash, and even Hall can't wrestle anymore, in 10-15 years, and the bookers are forced to put guys like Devon Storm, Edge, Christian, the Hardyz etc. out there, who aren't known very well, and really rely on their wrestling skills to get them over. All the sport-entertainment fans will be fleeing, while the hardcore wrestling fans will still be around, and will be forced to see the WWF and WCW go through a growth period, and put out some "cartoonish" gimmicks, like what happened in the early 90's.

Now, Thunder, WOW what a big difference. Instead of Jobber Vs. Jobber matches, were fortunate to see Jobber Vs. Main Eventer. Making Thunder "special" again was just a ploy by Russo and Ferrera to try and get people to tune into the show again, and when they do, they’ll see big names in the company, which in the end the bookers are hoping we will fall for it and watch. Thunder still needs a lot of work done to it, and not minimal effort, like getting the more popular wrestlers to appear. They need the matches on the card to mean something, and not just be dead matches that go no where. That’s why shows like WWF Jakked, Metal, and WCW Saturday Night are boring to most fans. The matches are just plain duds, with no meaning, most with just squash endings. WHY would you want to watch those? Some people including myself don’t mind since the matches are pretty good, but the average wrestling fans, buys more into the entertainment rather than the actual competition. Seeing a plain old match is just boring to them, that all relates to the topic above, about the new young talent. None of these guys are capable of working a crowd yet, they rely on their wrestling ability to amuse the fans. Sometimes it does, sometimes you just get a boring chant for their efforts.

Failed Gimmick of the week, for this week has to be, Roddy Piper’s sudden heel turn at Starrcade last night. What was the point of it? We’ll find out tonight on Nitro, but, even then, what point did it serve. Sure didn’t help the story line by any. Sure it’ll just cause a rematch between Goldberg and Hart at most likely the next pay-per-view, Souled Out, but right now, most fans  were probably just turned off by that. Especially when the match was half decent, and we get a crap ending like that one? Remember WCW, stupidity is not a right. It’s a privilege.

That’s all for tonight, thanks for reading. Enjoy the week that follows, and have a Merry Christmas and, or a Happy Hanukah depending on what your heritage is. Good night.
