| Welcome
back to Pain Tolerance. I finished my last exam earlier today so Pain Tolerance
will be returning to the usual schedule this week on. There’s been lots
of speculation circulating around the debuts of the WCW 4 (As they’ve been
referred to as.) There isn’t much new news that’s really appealing Hogan
is rumored to be coming back, does anybody see this as help for WCW? So
since there’s not one big news story, I thought I’d just comment on smaller
things. Then as usual the failed gimmick of the week to wrap up tonight’s
column.
First
off, this may not concern all of you, but TSN(The Sports Network), the
main Sports channel in Canada who air RAW on Monday Nights, and Nitro on
Wednesday afternoons has decided to stop showing the RAW replay that usually
airs on Tuesday afternoons. Nitro won’t be shown on Wednesday afternoon’s
either, I’ve heard it will be shown at midnight Tuesday Night/Monday Morning.
However, RAW will continue to have it's 9pm slot on Monday’s if there is
no hockey or baseball games. The most obvious point here is TSN must not
have much faith in WCW’s Nitro. To be airing it at midnight will not be
getting many viewers since WCW is still geared at children and the entire
family. The other point that most people may not recognize is while WWF
is getting high ratings in the US with mid 6’s, in Canada it’s a whole
different story. RAW is lucky to pull off 900,000 viewers in Canada on
TSN. Some of you may wonder why. It’s simple the USA has three hundred
million estimated population. While Canada only has thirty-four million
estimated population. So if RAW is getting roughly 900,000 viewers, can
you imagine what Nitro is getting? Wouldn’t be surprised if it was only
five to ten thousand viewers. Plus right now with Nitro being aired on
Wednesday’s at 3pm EST, that’s 12pm on the west coast (Vancouver), which
means kids would be in school. I went to both the Toronto WWF House
Show and the WCW Mayhem pay-per-view back in November, and the advertisements
for the WWF show were overwhelming as usual while WCW had nearly no advertisements
except for a few newspaper ads. Which leads to more popularity for
the WWF whom had a near sold out crowd for the tickets that were available,
while the WCW pay-per-view was no where near a sell out and had plenty
of seats in the upper deck.
Doesn’t
it seem that nearly every day we hear another top name in the wrestling
world has injured himself? In WCW, the entire nWo is out with injuries
the only one that may be able to work the upcoming pay-per-view is Jeff
Jarrett. Hart’s concussion is still bothering him, Nash fractured his ankle,
Scott Stiener is still out with his back injury, and Hall with his broken
ankle or whatever he has. Goldberg is out with his damaged arm, Sting is
out whether it’s injury related or not, Hogan is out, no injury but just
pure laziness.
In
the WWF we have the Undetaker out with a pec injury, Mick Foley is struggling
with bad knees but is still continuing to perform, Austin is out recovering
from his neck surgery.
In
ECW there aren’t many notable injuries except for Rob Van Dam. But in ECW’s
case that could spell trouble for their Friday Night TNN show. Tommy Dreamer
and Raven are still working injured. One thing that should be pointed out
about ECW is the wrestlers will more than likely work through an injury,
rather than call in sick, or sit at home and collect the cheques.
Hulk,
Hollywood Hogan what ever you want to call him is rumored to be on the
Thunder tapings this coming Tuesday. Who really wants him back? I sure
don’t, because it’s obvious what will happen. Instead of spreading his
"Hulkamaniac" power for the good of the company, he’ll whine for the Heavyweight
Title, get it finally and we won’t see it off him for a while. Back in
1998, I’m actually surprised he gave the title to Goldberg willingly. With
Hogan rumored to be on Thunder, doesn’t that seem a bit strange. Sure they’ve
been trying to build up Thunder, just the ratings aren’t there. If
they actually do think he will draw why would they waste him for just another
regular Thunder. Why not hold him off for Nitro next week, or put him on
tonight?
With
nearly all the top draws in WCW out, really the only popular one left is
Sid. As far as we’ve seen, it’s a Jarrett/Sid heavyweight title match.
Well Jarrett isn’t cleared to wrestle yet so tht may not evn happen. Right
now, the ultimate horrifying thing that could happen to WCW would be if
Sid went down with an injury. Then we could possibly see WCW rely on the
younger talent to keep the company going. Then we could see guys such as
Kidman or Vampiro on top.
Last
night during the Super Bowl the WWF aired a couple commercials during the
Super Bowl. I only saw the Beauty Pageant one, and during Half Time Heat
they aired the one ABC didn’t approve of, which showed a senior’s home
were the seniors were going crazy. I can somewhat see why ABC didn’t like
this commercial since it was showcasing senior’s in a bad way, however
I don’t agree with their decision of not airing it since it was not that
bad.
The
WCW four have been said to be in Pittsburgh with hotel rooms booked. This
pretty much guarantees they have signed with the WWF. Why would they be
in Pittsburgh if they weren’t signed? They wouldn’t have them fly there
to discuss contracts, so obviously we’re going to see the WCW 4 on RAW
tonight, if the report of them being in the hotel in Pittsburgh is true.
How will they be brought in is another big question. I’ve heard they will
side with Vince McMahon and stop Triple H and Stephanie. Or another report
is they will come in and do an invasion type angle. Both seem great ideas,
except the invasion angle wouldn’t really work since none of them can work
the mic very well.
Tori
finally turned on Kane. This turn really shouldn’t have lasted that long.
I’m not totally against the angle, I just don’t see it furthering Kane.
As it looks right now, it seems that Big Show siding with DX may produce
a Kane Vs. Big Show match at Wrestlemania, and then the already scheduled
Rock Vs. Triple H title match up. The only thing that doesn’t add up about
all this I what about those backstage segments where Triple H and Stephanie
put down Tori about her paranoia of men. Stephanie went as far as to approach
Tori with a bogus story of the Rock liking to take advantage of women a
few weeks ago on Smackdown.
With
Rob Van Dam out with an injury now for an estimated couple of months where
does this leave the ECW title? Heyman held Awesome/RVD back until the ratings
on TNN grew and now that they have grown you could see he was beginning
to push Awesome/RVD. Awesome even cut a promo on TNN this past Friday stating
that his next target would be Rob Van Dam. Spike Dudley’s run for the title
seems to gone now, and Heyman is left with a champion minus a contender.
Who will it be? Possibly Sabu. I just hope we don’t see another Spike Dudley/Mike
Awesome match. The one at Guilty as Charged, was all right. It ended the
quick run Spike had. Possible Tommy Dreamer or Raven could be pushed up
to the Heavyweight title, since they lost the tag titles at Guilty as Charged.
But that would go against the reports of an upcoming feud between the two
with a special stipulation being who ever won will receive the services
of Francine as a valet.
On
the Halftime Heat interview with Steve Austin, Ross mentioned Austin’s
relationship with Debra. It’s surprising that they brought it out in the
open, mind you on the Steve Austin A&E biography a while ago, they
stated that the two were engaged as well.
With
the NFL finally finished, it’ll be interesting tonight to see where the
extra viewers wind up. Will they add to the already overwhelming ratings.
Or, if the extra ratings will go towards the plummeting WCW ratings.
There
isn’t much else to bring up, so it’s time for this week’s Failed Gimmick.
This week’s Failed Gimmick is the Mamalukes with Disco Inferno. There are
a few teams that could use and deserve the tag titles much more than Big
Vito and Johnny the Bull. The gimmick of the italian mobsters was all right
for the vignettes of them getting the payment off Disco. Then they brought
in Lash Leroux to try and keep it fresh. That was all right for the time
being, but then it should of concluded at Starrcade. But, they continued
and even had Disco join the Mafia types. This is where it really should
of ended. Disco is too much of a talent to be wasted in an angle like that.
He should actually drop the whole Disco Inferno bit, become more of a focused
fighter, and he could seriously be a contender for a singles title. He
has more talent and charisma than the Mamalukes together, and he’s managing
them?
That’s
it for tonight a bit small but there really hasn’t been anything that has
caught my eye recently. Thanks for reading, and enjoy whatever show you
watch tonight. |
