Jesse AKERS, b. February 1827 in Bland Co., VA; d. January 1902 in Graham, (Bluefield), Tazewell Co., VA.  He married Julia Frances NOELL, b. May 1830 in VA; d. aft. 1902, in VA; on May 25, 1853 in Pulaski Co., VA.  Marriage performed by J.G. Cecil, Min.
Note:
War records from the National Archives indicates that Jesse Akers was enlisted in the 45th infantry at Narrows, VA; in April 1862.  He was captured by Union forces and taken to Camp Morton, IN; where he stayed until the war was over and then taken to a hospital in Richmond, VA.  The 45th Regiment Virginia Infantry was organized about May 29, 1861, with ten companies, A to K.  Company I was enlisted September 3, 1881, and served with the regiment until January 15, 1862, when it was assigned to the 23rd Battalion Virginia Infantry as company C.  The regiment was reorganized May 14, 1862.

On June 5, 1902, Julia Frances NOELL AKERS applied for aid under the act to aid the citizens of Virginia who were disabled by wounds rendered during the war between the States while serving as solder, sailors, or marines of Virginia and such as served during the mid war as soldiers, sailors, or marines of Virginia, who are now disable by disease contracted during the war, or by the infirmities of age, and the widows of soldiers, sailors, or marines of Virginia who lost their lives in mid service, or whose death resulted from wounds received or disease contracted in mid service.

Lewis Henley AKERS was a professional painter.  Painted water towers, commercial and residential properties.  Excellent baker.  He and grandma operated a restaurant at the old sale barn in Marshalltown, IA.  Made wedding cakes and pies as Maid-Rite restaurant in Marshalltown sold grandpa's pies for many years.

Note:
Ethel Edna HORRELL was a wonderful baker.  Invented orange chiffon cake in 1949-50.  Pillsbury stole the recipe from her when one of their delivery reps would stop by the restaurant in Marshalltown, have lunch and then acquire a little more of the recipe.  Finally he disappeared and Pillsbury announced this new orange chiffon cake in a magazine.  I believe that my aunt Jeannie Clarke has the magazine.  Jeannie lives in Hackinsack (?), MN.
Grandma's father was Sidney William Horrell who died in 1911 in Leedey, OK.  Alva Frederick Horrell Adopted grandma.  Alva was born on March 9, 1892.

The below letter was written by Mary Magdaline ARMSTRONG ROBBINS for the "Our Community Heritage" book.
My father, Edward ARMSTRONG was born in Shenandoah, VA.  He married Ollie Mae AKERS.  Ollie has one daughter, Alice McGUIRE, from a previous marriage.  Ollie and Edward had nine children.  There were two sets of twins, James and John and Wilma and Delma.  Both sets of twins died in infancy.  Jethro died at birth.  Cecil died at the age of 18 from kidney failure.  Edward died in March 1955 at the age of 72 from miners asthma.  He was employed by Robert J. Fleming Co., for Banner.  Ollie died August 26, 1973.  Ollie and Edward were survived by three daughters, including Fay, Gay and Mary.  Gladys Fay ARMSTRONG was born January 1, 1915.  She married James RITCHIE from Banner.  Fay and James reside in Sandy Ridge, VA.  Gaynell ARMSTRONG married Vernon COUCH.  They had five children.  Bobby, Howard, Leta, Alice and Carson.  Vernon died in the mines in 1943.  Gay passed away on September 10, 1987.  Howard died in a house explosion in 1988.
Mary Magdaline ARMSTRONG was born February 6, 1924.  She moved to Detroit, MI to marry John David ROBBINS, Jr., who was originally from Sandy Ridge.  John and Mary were married on August 24, 1946.   They have three daughters, Gladys May, Joyce Ellen and Esther Hope.  John and Mary have eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.  Gladys lives in MO and has five children.  Joyce lives in Mt. Clemens, MI and has three children.  Esther lives in Sterling Heights, MI and has two boys.  Mary and John's great-grandchild is twenty months old.  Her mane is Rebecca Joy KERBY.
John ROBBINS was drafted into the Army in April 1943.  He was honorable discharged on December 9, 1945, and later went to school for auto mechanics.  He worked at the Budd Wheel Co., for 30 years, retiring on December 1, 1976.
Mary ROBBINS spends most of her time in her garden, the most poplar garden in the neighborhood.  John and Mary live in Warren, MI.
