Now... Books are my greatest passion in life. Seriously! I love nothing more than reading a book. Especially if it is a good one! Here is a list of the ones that I absolutely can NOT live without!
- Robert Jordan
- Tad Williams
- Melanie Rawn
- Orson Scott Card
- Douglas Adams
- Robert Shea/Robert Anton Wilson
- Clive Barker
- Marion Zimmer Bradley
These are my MUST read authors!!! If YOU have any that you want to share with me, drop me a line or leave me a note in the guestbook (which isn't up and running yet!! SORRY!!!!). I am always eager to here about something new to read!!!! Or to debate the merits of what I like!
Robert Jordan -- by far the most masochistic author on the market these days!! I swear the man is trying to drive me insane!!!!! He TORTURES me with the amount of time between his new releases in the Wheel of Time series. If you haven't started on this series yet and have a few years on your hands to spare to this epic undertaking, I say get it in gear and get down to your local bookstore or library!!!! This series is absolutely amazing!!! It is soooo complex and the plots are amazingly intricate! Jordan certainly tries to keep your brain working while you are reading!!!
Here is the series so far, in order --
- The Eye of the World
- The Great Hunt
- The Dragon Reborn
- The Shadow Rising
- The Fires of Heaven
- Lord of Chaos
- A Crown of Swords
- The Path of Daggers
Tad Williams -- the Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn series is another great one to read!! Not of the same epic proportions as Jordan's undertaking, but still a hefty read! And the ELVES!!! If you are into elves, you have GOT to read this series! He has the most artfully crafted and poigently beautiful elves (in the form of the Sithi) that I have ever had the fortune to encounter in print! They amazed me! And nearly broke my heart with their beauty!!!!
Another series by Williams that has caught my interest is the Otherland series. Definitely more techno-computer related than anything else I have read of his, but it still has the fullness of vision and sense of balance that I find so appealing in his writings. If you have any interest in the future of virtual communities and on-line gaming, this is definitely worth a read!So far the series has two novels out. They are --
- Otherland Volume One: City of Golden Shadow
- Otherland Volume Two: River of Blue Fire
Melanie Rawn -- Okay. This one is for you dragon lovers out there! Rawn has crafted and AMAZING new view of the interrelationships between humans and dragons that should enthrall even the most hard-core McCaffrey fan! They are vibrant and alive evcn though they lack the ability of mind-speech that most dragon lovers who grew up on McCaffrey expect, but PLEASE, don't let this deter you from trying her out! Plus, there is the added bonus of cover art my Michael Whelan! Phenomal artist that he is! He helped to make the already larger than life (giggle) dragons even more fantastic for me!!!!
Check these out!!!!
Dragon Prince trilogy
- The Dragon Prince
- The Star Scroll
- Sunrunner's Fire
Dragon Star trilogy
- Stronghold
- The Dragon Token
- Skybowl
Orson Scott Card -- Enders' Game is another great read... I didn't put it down once between the time I picked it up and the time I finished it!.... Three hours and I was so wrapped up in what was happening... But, I will give you the warning that the person I got the book from didn't give me!! This is a VERY emotionally intense book... Be prepared!!!!!!!!
Douglas Adams -- Strictly for camp and fun value, you have committed a grave sin if you haven't read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. All I am going to say, is 42. Go to the store. Get it (preferably the compiled edition which has all the series up through Mostly Harmless). Read it. THEN ask me what I mean by '42'... ~impish grin~
Robert Shea & Robert Anton Wilson -- The Illuminatus Trilogy. If you can make it through this one time without going completely insane, I applaud you! And add that now you have made it through, you need to go back and reread it. Several times... It is the ONLY way to appreciate everything that is going on in this wacky series! But well worth it if you can stick it out!!!!!! But, hey! I will leave that up to you to decide
Clive Barker -- ANYTHING by this man!!! I love him! He is my kind of guy! A bit twisted, but oh so imaginative! Did I mention that my teddy bear is named Pinhead?... Seriously though, Imajica is probably my favorite by him... Weaveworld is an earlier novel and in some ways similar to Imajica, but both are definitely worth a read! Weaveworld is lighter of heart and more fanciful (if any Barker stuff can be said to be!...) than Imajica. The Great & Secret Show is another good one! And I am really partial to two of his shorter works -- Cabal which was the basis for the movie Nightbreed. And The Last Illusion which was the basis for The Lord of Illusions. Though, in my personal opinion, the stories are ALWAYS better than the movies!!!
Marion Zimmer Bradley -- wonderful woman. Talented author. But the one and only work of hers that I CAN'T live without is The Mists of Avalon. I am a big Arthurian legend freak (bet you couldn't tell that by the name, eh?...). I first read this when I was about 11 or 12... I don't think a year has gone by since that I haven't read it at least once. Usually two or three times! Guys -- you probably won't be as thrilled by it as us women are. Ladies -- if you don't have it, go and get it!
