The magical concept of the world as a mirror of the self is a very ancient one and within this concept lies the value of individual action towards peace and love within the world as a whole. For the world to reflect the kinds of values so many of us hold we must be willing to express love for all the life forms with which we share this planet.

In ancient times the natural world was wild and untamed, humanity looked upon the ebb and flow of the seasons, the cycles of the moon and planets and the ever-present sun as divine forces without which we could not survive. In cathedrals of trees and groves, the natural world was worshipped. Humanity felt a connection to the earth, the planets, seas and heavens, and within the world of our ancestors there was both meaning and mystery in all things. Animals and plants shared the earth with humanity both as sources of food and as totem spirits. Everywhere there was balance.

Since the industrial revolution the quest of humanity has been to overpower and dominate nature. We have come to view all other life forms, plants and animals as existing solely for our human needs. We have seized and subjugated the seas, the kingdoms of the animals and plants, yet everywhere we see the ruin we are causing.

Slowly the tide is turning as we come to understand that nature will not be dominated by humanity, it will only die under our control.
