WHAT DEFINES CEREMONIALISM?

      Hmm... well, I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "magic exists in the rituals of everyday existance."  But I can tell you what astrology, numerology, and true names have to do with the OoH... basic Hermetic Theory (IRL derived from the Emerald Tablets of Hermes Trismegistus, between 500 and 5000 years old) is as follows: "As Above, So Below."  This follows: As Within, So Without. And so on.  This essentially means that the same pattern, the same laws and symbols and procedures, move through everything the same way -- the pattern that exists in the stars also exists in our smallest cells and mitochondria, the ways of the natural world reflect the ways of the inner mind.
      Another fundamental part of Hermeticism / Western Mystery is Kabbalah, which is mainly founded on the idea that the mathematical concepts of 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 are fundamental building-blocks of all existance.  Zero is nothingness, One is the point that springs from nothingness due to a discriminating perception, etc. etc.  Numerology has its roots in this, though there are many silly and fraudulent forms. The idea of true names has its roots in the most ancient shamanic thought, as well as the basics of Egyptian rite magick; there is a language that was used to create the world and the cosmos, and the "word" spoken in creating a thing is the "true name" of that thing.  This theory holds that knowing a thing's true name gives one power over the thing, and that beings Awaken through understanding and knowing their true name, or perhaps that of their Avatar.

        OoH NUMBERS -- There are roughly 275 Awakened magi in the Order of Hermes, making it by far the largest mystick society in the world.  It is estimated that roughly 20 new apprentices are Awakened and inducted into the Order every year, despite its selectiveness... but it is also estimated that between 15 and 30 Hermetic magi (also mostly Flambeau) die every year on the front lines of the war with the Technocracy.
 



PERIPHERAL CEREMONIALIST GROUPS

        The ORDER -- The acolytes and apprentices of the OoH are primarily drawn from secretive groups and those inclined toward mathematics and/or linguistics.  The majority of Hermetic acolytes are either: New Age occultists (HOGD etc.) and neo-pagans, training to be Thig or Ex Miscellanea apprentices -- security experts, performing surveillance or protection duties for Houses Janissary or Flambeau -- or scholars, serving as researchers or librarians for Houses Fortunae, Guernicus, or Shaea.  Houses Bonisagus, Fortunae, and Shaea sometimes draw acolytes from the Arcanum.  Houses Janissary and Tytalus are fond of recruiting acolytes from the CIA, and sometimes from military intelligence like House Flambeau does.
        Most of the Order's consors are military, paramilitary, and security personnel who serve the magi of House Flambeau and Janissary.  Those who are not generally fall into one of two categories -- hackers and spies for House Thig, or bureaucratic Personnel Division (clerks and such) under the purview of the magi Ex Miscellanea.  Consors are sworn to secrecy, closely watched, well-paid, and often (especially in the case of House Janissary's more influential servants) placed under geases or bound to magickal oaths that cause illness, comas, or even death in those who betray them.

The HEKELOTH (Eight Palaces of the Earths)
        According to the Kaballists, God set eight layers between earth and the Horizon, each layer corresponding to a virtue and a planet.  These lesser paradises and purgatories are administered by lesser angels, and it is said that souls not good enough for the Heavens but not bad enough for the Hells come here.  Some say that Paradox can carry magi to Realms located here.  The first Hekeloth follows the moon, and shelters souls who require Fortitude; the second joins Mercury and represents a thirst for Justice; the third is with Venus, and is for true Lovers; the fourth realm is Prudence, and mirrors the Sun; the sixth is for the Just, the seventh is for Contemplatives, the eighth swims among the stars and is set aside for the faithful, and the ninth is the Horizon itself -- that "First Moving Thing".  The layers, also known as Worlds or Palaces, are separated by spaces filled with winds.

        I don't know if I really like the idea of generating Rotes like this for Mage, but someone said I should put some basic rotes like those from (shudder) D&D, so here's some ideas anyway.  Most of these are taken from other games systems, even silly ones.  I'll finish'em when I can get to'em.
