Description
Gaunar stands a menacing 2 meters tall, he looks (actually is) really strong, he has brown eyes, with wild long red hair cascading down the sides of his face to his shoulders and beard and mustache to match. He usually wears a copper colored banded mail, with some strange forged designs in silver overlaped in its front (this armor belonged to an enemy captain he killed during his time in the army). He bears several scars in his cheeks from his childhood. And of course, he will normally be found holding a jar of ale.
He also carries a beautiful bastard sword, its hilt looks like three interwoven tongues of flame, ending at a dragon like claw grasping a ruby on the pommel, the sword is called Flameblade, and its name is carved in the hilt. If questioned about the sword, he will say that it was part of a young red dragon's lair he and his former companions once attacked.
Flameblade:
Gaunar's sword is a flame tongue +3, and has the special ability to throw a fireball (5d6 damage) three times a day, if the proper command word is spoken, it can also Heat metal twice a day and Affect normal fires twice a day. Gaunar is NOT aware of any of the spell-like magical effects.
History
He was born 29 years ago on the cold regions of the north, the first son of a strong warrior, one of the best fighters in the village. When he was five, brigands attacked the village, killing anyone who stood against them, after they sacked the village, they kidnapped the young women and children, later selling them to slave traders.
Gaunar was separated from his mother after she was sold to a warlord, while he was kept as a servant to the slave traders, cleaning the tables and serving them drinks, at least till a buyer could be found. He was sold four years later to a band of thugs and murderers, who used him mostly for the same things the slave traders did, or sometimes as bait to lure their victims. These bandits humiliated him and lashed him for fun when they were drunk.
After a year with the bandits, Gaunar escaped one night when his masters were asleep, unfortunately, one of the bandits noticed he was missing, and went after him with several hounds, ready to teach the little boy a good lesson. While he ran, Gaunar bumped into a group of mounted men, and implored their help. At that very moment, the bandit and his dogs emerged from the woods, and told them to give him the boy. Noticing the fresh wounds on the boy's face, one of them dismounted, unsheating his sword, "you want him, you scum, come and get him" he told the bandit.
In the battle that ensued, the party of adventurers overpowered the bandit in less than a minute. The next day, after the healer had taken a good look at the boy, the party stormed the bandit's hideout, and later claimed the reward they knew the nearby city was offering for them.
Not wanting to leave the child on some orphanage, and with the boy's consent, the adventurers "adopted" Gaunar and took it upon themselves to care for him. Gaunar and the warrior who had initially stood up for him became very close.
That warrior, named Varthal, taught him how to use the sword and the art of combat, and while the boy made a great disciple to the warrior, both the party's healer and wizard were never able to teach him anything, not because he was dumb, he simply didn't care, you see, he wanted to be like Varthal.
Many years went by, and Gaunar became a fine warrior on his own right. Even after the adventurers disbanded and retired to live a better life, Gaunar lived and trained with Varthal in a small coastal town, were he owned an inn (the crossed swords inn and tavern) .
When he became of age, Gaunar left his home in search of adventure, and it was that very search that motivated him to join the kingdom's army. He was in the army for two years or so, where he clearly excelled in combat, but never got very far due to his lack of discipline and his "problem" with authority.
Once he left the army, he joined a group of adventurers in search of excitement, he had many adventures during that time, and I frankly pity any PC who asks him about it, for it is probable that they will have to tape his mouth to shut him up.
After several years, the group disbanded and Gaunar used his savings to open an inn. That didn't exactly worked out, he didn't wanted to be held down in one place, and he wanted more excitement (even though, believe me, that inn was very exciting, lots of brawls), and so, after selling the place to a local merchant, he set out once again, ready for whatever would come.
Roleplaying Gaunar
Gaunar is very carefree, he loves battle and he shows it, he is very curious and is always ready to take on a next adventure, with a small recess to guzzle down lots of ale. He does not like restrictive laws and hates being bossed around. But he will follow the party's plan if it sounds reasonable.
He can be problematic at times, he wants to solve everything with his fists and sword, especially when he has drank too much ale. He sometimes starts bar room brawls for fun.
Gaunar was designed as "the wise guy" for an adventuring party, he may not know much about anything else, but he sure knows about dungeons and monsters, and has long and sometimes boring stories to prove it. It will be better if he is introduced to the party while they two or three levels lower than him.
