Notes on this Picture: This passage of the text makes two distinct references.
1) To the fighting that was done and to the casualties suffered. Not simply referring to character deaths, but to the strains suffered by all in a guild war, a situation in which some, even in the Bardic Order, reach their breaking point, quit under harsh circumstances, and hurt the guild in the process leaving bitterness in their wake.
2) The second reference is to the fact that the Bardic Order, although always concerned with its reputation, has often had to test the fortitude of this reputation when it saw fit to bring in someone that it knew would draw upon it the ire of other guilds.
