I talked earlier about advertising. I'd like to add a few extra points about that. Advertising is not just an ad you place in a newspaper or in an online classified. Another good source is the good old standby, the business card. You can leave these little beauties everywhere you go, and they don't cost very much at all. Sure, some of them, maybe most of them, will find their way into the trash can, but you never know if the next person that reads it will become your best customer. Don't forget flyers as well. You can have thousands of them printed very cheaply, and get your kids or the neighborhood kids to help pass them out around the neighborhood or in a parking lot, if permitted. Kids work pretty cheap, too, sometimes they'll do it for just a few bucks or a good helping of ice cream!

Here's another suggestion to advertise your business. Find out from a local printer how much he'd charge to have some paper placemats made with ads on them. Then, approach restaurants in your area to see if they would be interested in free placemats. You then offer the businesses in your area ad space on the placemats for a small fee. Your ad would be at the top, and the other ads would actually pay for your own! It's a great way to reach a large number of people, and though you might pay a little at first, in the end it's free advertising for you! Try it and let me know how it works for you.

What DO we do with our kids? We've FINALLY got our home business up and running, and though the original idea was to work at home so you could be with the kids, NOW they are driving you up the wall! Here are a few suggestions that may help, at least temporarily! Find some crafts they can do on an adjoining table, something simple that will make them feel as though they are very creative. You can also think of some ways they may be able to actually help you in running your business, little fun chores they can do. Don't forget the fun part, kids are big on fun! There are always, of course, the old standbys of cartoons and taped childrens programs. In the end, however, you might seriously consider that, though you want to be at home for the kids, it will probably be a good idea to get at least a part time sitter to watch them, like two or three times a week. This will give both of you a break from each other, and give you the opportunity to catch up on some things with fewer interruptions.
