The name 'Halhul' is associated with the Prophet Younis whose tomb is inside "Annabi Younis Mosque"which was named after him. It is said that Prophet Younis lived in this region for one (hawl or a year)  and so the town has got its name.

It is said also that the name of the town has been taken from the old Roman word (Halulus)
