A few years back, progress once again took it's tole on our fair city. An old deserted farm house, was finally torn down to make room for an industrial complex. But for all of us that went to school not far from that house, we'll always remember it as being one of the most haunted places we've ever heard of. The house sat about 1/2 mile down an old, overgrown dirt road. In it's hay day, the house had been almost a small plantation, with 5 separate buildings for servant quarters and a huge separate kitchen. The story the parents told the kids was that the owner of the house had gone into a fit of rage after learning of his wife's infidelity, and threw her down the steps. Of course many of the stories expounded upon that theory and said he threw her so hard her head went though the window in the door (of course some sweet soul provided bright red paint drips to make this one realistic). Having never been one to believe 'ghost stories', a group of us decided we would check this place out and see just what it was all about. On our first attempt, we made it to the house. Every window had been broken and it was obvious various creatures of the alive and kicking kind were now calling this place home. We decided to not let that deter us however and boldly marched up to the front door. Just as we step up to the threshold, a blood curdling scream rang out from upstairs. Of course we all ran and stopped only when we ran out of breath a good ways from the house. After talking it over, we all came to the conclusion it had to have been some sort of mass hysteria and decided this time, we'd check out the windows rather than the front door. We tried 3 different times to get close enough to look into a window, but every time we touched the window sill to pull ourselves up, we'd hear a woman scream out again. It was more than we could stand and decided we'd wait until we had a few extra people with us before we went any further. A few days later, the 3 of us plus half a dozen guys from the varsity football team decided we'd try to sneak up on the place after dark. As we started down the road, we noticed a light in an upstairs window and thought someone else from school had beat us to it. About half way down the road however, the light went out. We waited and waited and no one ever came back down the road. We thought about turning back and had actually started back down the road when we noticed the light was back on again. As we watched it moved slowly from room to room upstairs. Yet when we started back towards the house, it immediately went out again. Several times we watched the light come on as we were walking away from the house and go off every time we moved toward the house. The guys decided they were going to find out what was going on and went boldly up to the house, but as soon as they steped across the threshold, the woman screamed again. That one scream was all it took before we left at a dead run for our cars parked at the end of the dirt road. I personally never tried to visit the house again. I can't explain what caused the light or why a woman screamed every time someone came into the house, but it happened to us and I've heard 100's of others say they had the same experience.
