The house I grew up in was built in the mid 1850's as a plantation house. Two of the houses built for the servants remained, having been turned into display buildings for my Dad's collection of old bicycles. We were not allowed to go into the bicycle houses (as we called them) without an adult being present, and over the years it got to where we couldn't get Mama to go in with us because of what we saw and felt when we were in the smaller of the two. First you have to understand that these were not really houses though in the 1850's they had actually been used for that purpose. They really were nothing more than 4 walls a roof and a floor with one window and a door, measuring only about 15 feet by 15 feet. More the size of a storage building than a house. Yet, no matter where you stood in the one house, if you kept quite for just a moment or two, you'd feel a cold wind start to softly roll over your body. You could almost see the wind slowly winding it's way through to one room building. After several minutes of the wind moving through the house, a form would start to take shape in front of the only window that looked out over the back of the house. The shape would never take on anywhere close to a solid form, but if the light was just right, you could tell it was a woman standing there, watching something in the back yard. Then the door would swing open by itself, and the woman would turn toward the door. As the door closed, the woman would run toward it and you could feel the cold air streaming pass you. Just about mid way in the room, you could see the outline of a woman in a man's arms and even with the coldness in the air, you could feel such a warmth in the room, you knew the two of them were in love. I tried for years to research the house and it's prior owners, but nothing in the records tell me anything that could account for these ghostly visitors. I like to think that long ago, a young man that lived in the house fell in love with a servant girl and they took what few moments they could to meet whenever they could. But that's probably nothing more than me being a romantic at heart.
