One hundred years ago today, a simple farmer from Skinem, TN reported seeing someone standing behind his outhouse (pictured below). He reported that the man was tall, with sandy brown hair, and wearing denims with a vest and hat. The farmer didn't recognize the man. He asked the stranger his name and invited him into the house for a glass of lemonade. The stranger kindly accepted the offer and followed the farmer into the house. The house was simple, much as the farmer himself was. The farmer, being the man of the house asked that his daughter Dean get the stranger some refreshments.
The daughter did as she was bid by her father and left the room so that the gentlemen could talk.
Noticing that the stranger hadn't spoken more than three or four words the entire time, the farmer asked once again what the stranger's name was. The stranger looked intot he gentleman's eyes and asked his name. He told him his name was Vernon. Vernon went into telling the stranger about his home life. That he had lost his wife when his daughter had been born and had raised her by himself. He had a small farm of cattle, and a large garden that he and his daughter worked for food.
Vernon invited the stranger to stay for dinner and dancing that evening, they were to celebrate a great crop of vegetables with neighbors from the town. Vernon was a fantastic fiddle player, and Dean was the belle of dancing around town !
The stranger agreed to stay, but insisted that he must be gone by midnight. Vernon, still not even knowing the stranger's name agreed that he would see the gentleman was gone by midnight.
The evening consisted of women sitting in circles eating dainty tea cakes, and sipping mint julips, gossiping about who was marrying who, and should be married before the dirty secrets escaped into town !
After a night of dancing and charming the ladies, the stranger announced to Vernon that he must leave. Vernon told Dean to stay at the church while he walked the gentleman back to his house. The stranger told Vernon that he must be standing in the exact spot that he arrived at behind the outhouse. Vernon walked the man behind the outhouse and shook his hand. The stranger smiled at Vernon and said.." My name will be John when next I am seen" until then, have a wonderful life with your beautiful daughter Dean.
