Day 1, 1:00 pm
"So where are we going now?" Leo asked as Jordan tossed Vanessa one set of car keys.
"Someplace loud for lunch," Jordan replied.
"Where?" Vanessa asked half dreading trying to follow Jordan through the streets of Boston, and half flattered he chose her.
"Hard Rock Cafe," Jordan answered.
Pure luck was on their side and they pulled into a parking garage about 20 minutes later. The two Tauruses wound their way up three levels and found two parking spaces seperated by two cars. The agents got out and Martin noticed Jordan checking his gun before closing the door of the car.
"Do you think you'll need that?" Martin asked.
"Someone knows we're out here and we're interested in the device that Tom's got. I want to make it difficult for them to get it," Jordan replied flatly.
They took the stairs to the ground level and walked down the block and around the corner from the garage. The Hard Rock was hard to miss with it's distinctive 20 foot high logo splashed across the front of the building. The agents entered and were greated by a life size likeness of Boston native Steven Tyler, complete with pink tongue sticking out.
"I wonder how much they want for it?" Jordan mused.
"Probably more than you make in a month," Zenya kidded.
"Remember," Jim pointed out, "he makes more than we do."
"Yeah," Jordan admitted, "but not much more."
A hostess walked over and asked them the infamous question, "Smoking or non-smoking?"
"Actually we're here to meet someone. Our flight was delayed," Jordan lied without missing a beat, "I hope he's still here."
"Oh," she replied, "you must be the lawyers from Chicago. He's right over here."
Jordan noted Leo and Vanessa exchange a glance, but the hostess didn't seem to notice. She led them to a table in a corner that was located under a speaker for the stereo system. It would make conversation hard, but evesdropping even harder.
Tom stood up as the team approached. Jordan made brief introductions, and soon they were seated and lunch had been ordered.
"Tom," Jordan said after the potato skins had been delivered, "we've got a problem."
"I've had this problem for almost 3 months, you can't tell me anything I don't already know," Tom replied.
"Leo is our computer guy. Tell him what you found."
"I did a search on the US Government personnel database for information on Sargent David Carter. He died in car accident 6 months ago. His records were also being monitored," Leo explained.
Tom looked worried, "Then either David didn't send the device, or the record is a fake."
"Either way," Leo said, "that record was being monitored and whoever was doing it was really good at it."
"Where's the device?" Jordan asked.
"Well hidden."
"I want to see it, Tom."
"I can take you to get it, but I'm worried about company."
"I've got an idea," Jim chimed in, "You and Jordan take one of the Tauruses and go retrieve the device. One of us will drive your car as a decoy."
"Drive it where?" Zenya asked.
"The other two cars will take different routes to your house," Jordan suggested, "It isn't too hard to get to."
"Sounds good," Tom replied.
"Ok, Vanessa, you're with us. Leo and Martin, you take Tom's car," Jordan said.
"Where is it?" Leo asked taking the key tom handed him under the table.
"It's the blue Honda parked next to me," Jordan said, "Jim and Zenya, you'll take the other Taurus. How long should they wander for?"
"I'll give you each indirect routes to take. It should take about an hour to get there," Tom said.
NRPG:
Too much silence from everyone. I don't think I gave you all enough to
do.
For the Decoys: Tom lives at Westover Airforce Base. The agents will have to show ID to get on to the base. Who knows what kind of condition his house will be in when they get there.
Sau Woon: Vanessa, Jordan and Tom are heading west to the town of Fitchburg. Have fun with it.
Respectfully submitted,
Alton Reich
