Mission2

Change of scenery

>"That's her," Zenya said, reaching for the door handle. Once out of the >car, Zenya went over to Lydia and gave her a hug. "Sorry for all the >mystery," she said, "but this is important. Leo, this is Lydia Antonin."

>"Nice to meet you," he said. "Now, if you ladies don't mind, I think we >should get off the street."

The trio went into Lydia's office building. Leo kept one eye over his shoulder the whole time, just in case. He was almost certain they weren't followed, but he wasn't about to let his guard down nevertheless. The street outside was still quiet, when the elevator door closed. They rode up to the 6th floor and got out. Lydia punched in an alarm override code and they entered. The office was very tastefully decorated. Zenya immeditely recognized the decoration style of her friend.

"So, do you think you can tell me what this is all about?" Lydia asked.

"I wouldn't have dragged you into this, if it wasn't necessary," Zenya replied. "We need a place to stay for a couple of days, preferably away from any large body of water. Do you have anything we can borrow?"

"Why away from the water?" Lydia asked with a puzzled look. She was getting more and more confused.

"I will explain later. For now, it's safer if you don't know too much."

Lydia accepted whatever reasons Zenya had to keep her in the dark. After all, Zenya had been there for her, when she needed help.

"I have a rebuilt hunting lodge 12 miles north of here. The seller has just finished restoring it to mint condition. It's in the middle of the woods, so the only water you will find nearby, is that in the tap."

"Great, you're a real life-saver, you know that? Leo, what do you think?"

"Huh?" Leo had been staring out the window and missed most of the conversation.

"Lydia has a hunting lodge in the woods, 12 miles north of here we can borrow for a couple of days."

"Sounds good to me," he said. "I'm sure Jordan will agree."

Lydia pulled out a map and made three copies of the route they had to drive to get to the lodge. She also gave Zenya a spare key to the place.

"Please be careful. I will have hell to pay, if anything happens to the lodge."

"Don't worry, we will," Zenya assured her. She wasn't certain herself though. If anyone followed them up there, there could be more violence. They had better make sure no one followed them then.

(Meanwhile, back at the motel)

After finishing his sweep, Jim had found three bugs planted in each room. Two of them were the same model, while the third one was different. He had pointed them out to the other team members. To avoid suspicion, they continued to discuss irrelevant things. Vanessa kept looking out the window, waiting for Leo and Zenya to return. She had to tell them about the bugs before they revealed any secrets. That shouldn't be a problem, as long as she could see them coming and go out and talk to them.

It took almost an hour and a half before they were back at the motel. Jordan suspected that they had to drive around a bit to throw off any followers. Vanessa went out to greet them and tell them about the bugs Jim had found.

Zenya passed out the maps and they all had a look at them. Jordan, who was from the Boston area originally, recognized the place and nodded. Now all they had to do was to think of a clever way of getting out of the motel, without causing too much suspicion. Martin was the first to think of a way:

"I will just run across the street to 7-11 and buy some beer," he said.

The others looked confused, but Jordan knew what he was getting at.

"OK, bring me back a couple of cold ones."

Martin went across the street and entered the 7-11. He made certain he was behind a rack of shelves, picked up his cellphone and placed a call to Jordan. Tracing a cellphone was virtually impossible, unless you had extremely hi-tech equipment.

"Good evening, this is Martin posing as Director Bintz of the Boston field office."

["Good evening, Director Bintz. What can I do for you?"]

"You can tell our audience that I want you to come downtown right away, to clear a few thing up."

["We'll meet you in your office in 20 minutes. Will that be OK?"]

"That'll be fine. Over and out."

Jordan told the others that Director Bintz of the Boston field office wanted to see them right away. They nodded their reply. Jordan passed around a note were he had written in bold letters: DIFFERENT ROUTES! MAKE SURE NO ONE FOLLOWS YOU! Underneath he had written: Car #1 - Z, L; Car #2 - V, Jim; Car #3 - Me, T, M.

When Martin got back, they went out to the cars.
