The main weapon is a "phaser", a word which is an acronym for PHASed Energy Rectification. The weapon comes in hand-held sidearm versions and in arrays on ships (beam here for USS Bethel's). A phaser is a directed-energy weapon used by Federation Starfleet and others. Like all Federation equipment, the design has been changed to reflect improvements over the years.
The phaser
comes in a version that tucks neatly into the palm of the hand. It can be worn
at the hip. The phaser rifle, a more
powerful weapon, is designed to be used with both hands.
Both the phaser and the phaser rifle can fire short or long bursts of phaser
fire, controlled by the operator. The settings range from stun to kill. The
dispersion field can also be varied. In the last resort they can be used as
explosive devices if set to self-destruct.

Phasers can be fired on wide beam to give a broad spread of fire,
on stun as shown in the picture, or at any of the levels.

Phasers can also be set to self-destruct using timed or immediate detonation, and can thus be used as a grenade or small mine.
