Urban Legends

You would think that, if there's nothing amiss, people would happily go on their way.  We would be glad that nothing worth noting has taken place.  But, being the humans that we are, we need to find conflict, to somehow exert our power over even ourselves.

When I was a child, one of my favourite things was getting together with my friends and having slumber parties.  Not that we would sleep!  No, we would try to stay up as long as possible, telling each other's fortunes and ghost stories.

Most of the ghost stories we would tell were what are now called Urban Legends.  An Urban Legend is a story that you might believe to be plausible, often told as though it really happened, and which somehow carries on the morals of the society.

These tales are told as having happened to a friend of a friend, or having been something read in the paper some time ago.  Yet there are characteristics which make them obviously apocryphal.  No one actually knows the people the stories happened to, no one recalls when they happened, no one knows the names of the parties involved, and if pressed, no one can find the reference in the papers.

Below are some of the stories I recall as a girl.

The Axe Murderer
The Parking Date
Car Trouble
The Black Widow Hair-do
Alligators in the Sewer
Organ Donor
