-1911 Stoddard-Dayton-

The Soddard-Dayton is the first true pace car. This car had
a 251-cid ohv l-4 that ran with 40(gross)hp.
-1949 Oldsmobile 88-

This car was the first of the "muscle cars." The
engine was a 304-cid ohv V-8 that had 135(gross)hp.
-1964 Ford Mustang-

The Mustang was often called a "ponycar". It
was exiting and affordable, because many of the parts
were shared from the falcon and fairlane. The engine
was a 289-cid ohv V-8 that had 271(gross)hp.
-1967 Chevrolet Camaro-

The '67 Camero was chevy's hottest car. There were 4
costomized cars supplied for the indy 500. These had a
special engine also;396-cid ohv V-8 with 375(gross)hp.
-1970 Oldsmobile 4-4-2-

The 4-4-2 is with out a doubt, a muscle car. This car was
the high preformance version of the mid sized Cutlass. The
engine was a 455-cid ohv V-8 running with 365(gross)hp.
-1972 Hurst/Olds-

For the first time in pace car history, an automotive supplier
name was included in the title. The engine was a 455-cid ohv V-8
that had 300(SAE net)hp.
-1978 Chevrolet Corvette-

One of my personal favorite cars, the '78 corvette carried a
350-cid ohv V-8 that had 220(SAE net)hp. This car celebrated
the 25th model year for the corvette.
-1980 Pontiac Turbo-Trans AM-

For the second time in pontiac history, one of thier cars
paced the indy 500 (1958, the Pontiac Bonneville convertible).
The engine was a 301-cid ohv V-8 that had 210(SAE net)hp.
-1984 Pontiac Fiero-

The Fiero is to date, the only mid-engine car to ever pace
the 500. This car is also the smallest in indy history
It carried a 164-cid ohv l-4 that had 232(SAE net)hp.
-1985 Oldsmobile Calais-

The Calais is essentially a downsized 3600-pound, 18',
rear-wheel drive, V-8-powered Delta 88. The engine was
a 164-cid ohv l-4 that had 215(SAE net)hp.
-1986 Chevrolet Corvette-

For a second time, the corvette paced the indy 500. All
'86 corvettes were considered replicas, so no special cars
were made. The engine: 350-cid ohv V-8 with 230(SAE net)hp.
-1987 Crysler LeBaron-

The LeBaron was redesigned for spring of '87. Much of this
redesigned car was based off of the Dodge Daytona Shelby Z.
Engine: 135-cid ohc 4-cylinder turbo that had 174(SAE net)hp.
-1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme-

Since 1949, Oldsmobile has had 8 pace cars. There were
50 convertible and 200 coupe street legal replicas made.
The engine was a 138-cid dohc l-4 turbo with 250(SAE net)hp.
-1989 Pontiac 20th Anniversary Trans AM-

Pontiac's third indy pace car was the 20th anniversary for
the trans am, the hottest version of the Firebird.
The engine was a 231-cid ohv V-6 turbo with 250(SAE net)hp.
-1990 Chevrolet Beretta-

The Cheverolet Beretta (my third favorite car)was truly one of
a kind. Only 75 indy beretta convertible pace cars were ever produced.
The 206-cid ohv V-6 engine packed 225(SAE net)hp.
