Unseen in the SSD_Insufficiently_Reluctant's starboard ship dock:
The smashed up Lancer has been pushed to one side, every spare space in
the unused dock having been filled with the cannibalized wreckage salvaged
from the topside repairs. With nobody watching, the heap of junk suddenly
shifts position slightly.. and millions of penny-sized chrome spiders pour
out of the gutted interior, spreading through Admiral Jadesfire's command.
Half of them find their way to the outer hull, the rest staying hidden
in the airducts and electrical conduits, taking up positions to assist
in repairs, and to provide a backup communications web via the secure spider
neutrino-band. A chrome stain spreads almost imperceptibly across the SSD's
hull, thinning as it covers the entire outer surface. Once reaching their
assigned position, the bots dig into the armor slightly to anchor themselves
within the shield perimeter, then activate. With an FX stolen shamelessly
from the Predator movies, the SSD seems to flicker, blur, and grow.. In
moments, the ship is completely enveloped in a gigantic 3d hologram of
Scrooge McDuck... The test concluded, this oversized trademark infringement
scowls menacingly, then vanishes. One by one, the other ships of the fleet
briefly turn into various cartoon characters, before reverting to their
normal appearance. With the tests concluded, the ships depart for the rendezvous
near Neptune. We are taking an awful risk, thinks Zapper. One can never
be too careful with the use of trademarked characters near the earth, for
it crawsl with the vilest most disgusting creature in the universe: Lawyers...

You want me to face this emperor? Great, except for two things.
One: Where is he? And two: When will you get this duct tape off of me?

In NASA databases, the moon of Neptune named Proteus is black as
coal. They are wrong. A mirrored egg lifts off from the now quicksilver
surface of this moon, and goes into orbit. Below, the seething surface
bubbles and roils like boiling mercury. Large globules of the stuff detach
and are lifted with the egg. Setting the amorphous globs into stable orbits
about the moon, the lone Noid dropship goes down for more. Eventually,
Proteus is ringed with a thousand or so large and small spherical globs
of the stuff. Then, one by one, the globs seem to slowly explode. Churning
with activity, they form large, complex irregular surfaces which duplicate
the ships of the motley fleet now leaving Earth orbit. In moments, color
begins to sweep through the ranks and the immitations are nearly complete.
From a distance, they would fool most scanners. The decoy fleet has been
assembled. Literally. Looked at up close, what at first seemed to be a
solid hull surface turns out to be composed of millions upon millions of
tiny metallic lego bricks. Hordes of miniscule chrome spiders dashing to
and fro madly go about assembling and painting the phony shells. As Zapper
leans back to watch his handiwork, the first of the defensive fleet's true
ships begin to arrive.

*the Blue Pea arrives at the decoy fleet, sitting around and sending
comm chatter to the other 17 ships. The bait is ready...*
