Under cover of the local night, the Vulcan remote probes coordinated
their actions to retrieve the abandoned science vessel, swooping down on
low "re-entry" trajectories that taxed their shields against the atmosphere.
The precise location of the vessel being known, the probes' shared neural
net rapidly formulated a plan to return it to its master.

The two Woodlice left on guard over the Vulcan ship were getting
sleepy. It was late at night, and nothing much was happening, or likely
to. Suddenly they heared a noise like an approaching supersonic airplace,
that somehow seemed to be coming from all many directions at once. As they
stared into the sky, they caught fleeting glimpses of fast-moving blue
lights, mounted on what might have been cylindrical objects a few meters
in length. The sound died away as the Vulcan remote probes came to a halt,
and hovered in midair over the ship. Abruptly, five tractor beams stabbed
down, and the ship was carefully lifted from the beach. Once their burden
was well clear of the ground, the probes moved it rapidly out over the
ocean, away from prying eyes. Another six probes attached themselves to
the sides of the ship, as a makeshift propulsion system, while yet another
two mounted themselves on the vessel's top and underside, and extended
their deflectors around it, trapping a large bubble of air. The entire
assemblage then accelerated rapidly upowards, to where S'Tranak was waiting
in the lifepod.

The danger was immediate, the threat was of the highest order, and
the required action - extermination. Zergs. In the solar system! Leroy,
watching the appearance of Jadesfire's scourge in freeze-frame, ponders
his next move. Alone, outnumbered and outgunned, he dare not go up directly
against so powerful an enemy. But what choices did he have? The Genesis
device was prepared now to terraform either Venus or Mars as Man's second
home. It was far too valuable as a resource to be squandered as a weapon.
Moving on the so-called Admiral on his own was too dangerous. He would
have to find other means to ensure the safety of Earth. Using relays planted
previously in different parts of the system, Leroy sends a message to the
Woodlice, the Cylons, and all other present members of the Earth Defense
Alliance. Appearing as a set of pictures, the images of Zerg destroying
human bases, of their swarms overrunning entire planets, was shown. (all
courtesy of screencaps from the briefing and combat training disk provided
by Blizzard, the interstellar arms manufacturer.) Then, when it is abundantly
clear that the Zerg are incredibly dangerous and driven by a genetic imperative
to conquer systems...he shows the last two series of images. The damning
evidence of Jadesfire's scourge, and the Admiral Jadesfire herself, no
longer fully human. The transmission, bounced around the system from several
small relays, is untraceable. Not risking the possibility that the EDA
might not act, he also takes matters into his own hands.. and prepares
a suitable offensive against the Zerg threat.

From an officer on the bridge of the Instigator: "Sir, there is
a transmission comming in. It is a bit scrambled but I'll see what I can
do. *Taps some buttons on the control pad* I have it Sir, but there is
some static." Commander Duker: "Put it on screen." Images start to show
up of creatures swarming around terran bases destroying them until nothing
is left. Picture after picture was shown, and none of them looked any better
the first. Death and destruction was all that was shown. Commander Duker:
"Those must be the Zerg we were told about when we were informed on all
that was going on. Turn that horrid sight off, Lieutenant." *The images
on the screen shut off.* "Do you know who sent the transmission, Lieutenant?"
Lieutenant: "The signiture says it came from Leroy the Protector." Duker:
Is there any way we can contact him?" Lieutenant: "No Sir, we are too far
out of rang, and besides the signal came through relays so we have no idea
where he is even if we wanted to find him." Commander Duker: " I guess
all we can do is wait untill we know exactly what we are up against, and
what the rest of the EDA wants to do."

Flickering shadows silently moved, watching Deux ex Machina as he
nervously entered the small "room" Carrying a portable commscreen, he set
it up, "We intercepted this from topside...I thought you'ld be interested".
Watching the array of images, the largest shadow detatched from the wall,
slowly. "Unfortunate.....you have attempted to trace it, have you not?"
"Yes, but we only have the signature....one 'Leroy the Protector'." The
shadow moved again. "A Protector? I see...We'll move all fullhuman crew
coreward...this is unexpected, but we will not be unprepared." As Mech
moved to disassemble the comscreen, Jadesfire motioned him away. "We'll
hook it into the organic network....the topside is too vulnerable now."
Several drones, again moving with an unnerving silence, moved in, as, in
the depths of space, Noid-issue temporal stasis envelopes began to lapse....

*Touching down on a scorch-blasted pad, an equally ugly shuttle
lands. The sitaution is not unique. The whole place was ugly. And dirty.
And smelly. Not that it was so much fate as by choice - the inhabitants
preferred it that way. Welcome to SinTacks Uror.*

*Stepping out of the shuttle, Cyborg Stan steps out and walks to
the middle of the hangar, in which he casual shifts his weight to the right.
While a bystander would not grasp the signficance of this, it happened
to be vitally important. This guy knew what he was doing here. The spies
scuttled off and reported the new arrival to their masters...*

Commander Duker turns to the Ensign at the helm. "Ensign Little
Foot, are there any ship yards in EDA territory?" Ensign Little Foot: "Let
me check sir." Taps his control panel. "There is one orbiting planet Vulcan
that is currently being unused" Duker: "Excellent. Take us there at warp
8, Ensign." Ensign: "Eye sir." Duker's Defiant class ship, Instigator,
turns it's noes to line up with Vulcan and flashes into warp. Duker: "Ensign,
let's stop by McDonald's on pluto, I'm kinda hungry." Ensign: "Damn, they
do have them everywhere."

Floating along a pulsating corridor in the depths of Mimas, Deux
ex Machina stopped before a thin, nearly clear membrane, and watched as
it irised open for him. Carefully working his way around the spherical
chamber, crisscrossed by long tendrils of creep, Mech heartily wished for
the artificial gravity of the _Insufficiently Reluctant_. A familiar spidery
shadow pushed off from the oppisite wall, giving the illusion of dropping
down on him, and Mech involuntarily yelped. As Jadesfire snared a tendril,
not bothering to reorient herself, and turned a bright-green eye his way,
Mech attempted to get a hold of himself. "Ma'am, we downloaded the information
from the terran satellites you requested. I also compiled that image sequence..."
"Let us see it." The viewscreen, overgrown by creep now, that he had brought
in yesterday flared to life, and Deux ex Machina slipped a small chip into
the reader. The recording showed images of the crew/hostages, in good condition,
being fed and allowed rest...and under heavy Zerg guard. A stream of images
of more than a thousand different humans....living as hostages among the
Zerg. At the end, a shadowy image of Jadesfire herself, and Mech..."Excellent.
You have located the last satellite the Protector's message was transmitted
from?" "Yes, ma'am" "Transmit."
