So you have found a vehicle that you think that you might
like to own. the next step is to take a demo drive.
HINT: even if you have driven a similar or exact
copy of the vehicle, ALWAYS DRIVE THE VEHICLE that
you are anticipating to purchase. Do not assume that it
will drive like the blue one and this is the same but
green. Yes, almost all of the time it will; however, every
once in a while there is a small difference between similar
vehicles. At least you will ensure that all the equipment
is operational prior to ownership.
During the test drive remember to test all equipment for proper operation. Make sure to drive the vehicle over a varied course. What I mean by this is take curves, straight-a-ways, short stops, slow driving and highway speed driving. On the first drive the salesperson should be with you in order to ensure that you know all the features. Please don't let me paint a dismal picture. Most of the cars in the new car market are OK; however, a few come from the factory with flaws. These few flaws are the reason that you should drive all vehicles that you are interested in prior to the sale.
IMPORTANT!!! It is very important to point out all discrepancies to your salesperson. By doing this you have positioned yourself for a better negotiation process. Hopefully, the salesperson will mentally see that he needs to discount the vehicle in order to procure the sale. Likewise, the salesperson is going to try to get ou to take mental ownership of the vehicle so that he can break down your sales resistance. Tell your salesperson that you will not take delivery of your vehicle until all discrepancies are corrected to your satisfaction. Once you leave the dealership with your new vehicle, the salesperson might become invisible, but until the sale is final he hasn't made his commission and is always available.
