What are the Functions of Mir?
The main function of Mir is to conduct experiments. The experiments are used to test the effect of microgravity on ordinary objects, like fire and water. The cosmonauts are told what to do every "morning" when the awaken. The schedule is transmitted electronically from Moscow and printed off for the cosmonauts to refer to.

Functions of the Shuttle-Mir project
As you may have heard, the Shuttle-Mir project ended on the first week in June, when american astronaut Andy Thomas was taken from Mir on the STS-86. The main function of the Shuttle-Mir project was to create a team between the two countries to prepare them for the International Space Station, which involves the Russian, American, Brazillian, Canadian, and European Space Agencies.

Mir's Links to Canada
For this Inquiry, I had to find a link from Canada to Mir. The one link happened a few years back when Chris Hadfield, an astonaut from Canada, worked on attatching the shuttle docking module to Mir with the CANADARM.
